Stations in Lexington, which is about 40 miles north of Danville, have devoted coverage this week to Centre College, which is the smallest of the four venues to host a debate this election cycle. The school became the smallest institution to ever hold a general election debate in 2000, the first time it hosted a Vice Presidential debate.

More than 3,000 media credentials were issued ahead of Thursday night’s debate. Republican Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan had a testy exchange during an interview on Monday with with WJRT in Flint, Mich. (video, via BuzzFeed, above).

The interview took a tense turn when WJRT’s Terry Camp asked Ryan if the United States has a gun problem. Ryan said the country has a “crime problem” and noted that gun laws “aren’t properly enforced.” He went on to advocate crime prevention in another way:

Ryan: The best thing to help prevent violent crime in the inner cities is to bring opportunity in the inner cities, is to help people get [inaudible] in the inner cities, is to help teach people good discipline, good character. That is civil society. That’s what charities and civic groups and churches do to help one another make sure that they can realize the value in one another.

Camp: And you can do all that by cutting taxes? With a big tax cut?

Ryan: Those are your words, not mine.

At that point in the interview, a Ryan aide can be heard in the background ending the interview, saying, “Thank you very much, sir.” Both Camp and Ryan stood up. continued…

Shortly before 9:30amET this morning from the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk, VA, Mitt Romney introduced Paul Ryan as his vice presidential running mate on the Republican presidential ticket.

NBC-affiliate WAVY,  CBS-affiliate WTKR and ABC-affiliate WVEC all elected to produce their own coverage instead of airing national coverage produced by their respective affiliated networks.

Nobles was invited to the White House on Wednesday, along with Carol Williams of Cincinnati’s WCPO and Charles Benson of Milwaukee’s WTMJ, to do one-on-one interviews with the President, who is in the midst of selling his new budget proposal to the public.

The invitations were, as Nobles pointed out last night, a way for Obama to target the local contingencies of the country’s three most prominent critics of the budget: Richmond’s Eric Cantor, the House Majority Leader; Cincinnati’s John Boehner, the Speaker of the House; and Milwaukee’s Paul Ryan, Chairman of the House Budget Committee.
