Carrie Hofmann

Hofmann comes from WCNC in Charlotte, where she has been assistant news director for two years. Prior to that, she was assistant news director at KMGH in Denver.

“Carrie has the vision and leadership skills we believe will help 41 Action News move forward,” KSHB VP-GM Brian Bracco said in a statement.

Hofmann begins at KSHB March 6. She replaces Peggy Phillip, who left the station in August. [via Bottom Line Communications]

Jamey Singleton joins WSET in Lynchburg-Roanoke as a web producer and freelance meteorologist. Singleton worked at rival WSLS until 2006 and has most recently worked at Cable 12 Television.

Phillip joined the station three years ago. She has previously been news director at WMAR in Baltimore, WSTM in Syracuse and WMC in Memphis. In 2009, she was named to the RTDNA Board of Directors. She began her television career at KTVN in Reno.

Phillip’s exit comes just a month after KSHB general manager Mike Vrabac announced his retirement.

We led our 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. newscasts with profile pieces on Harman followed by information to inform our viewers about warning signs and trends as well as suicide prevention telephone numbers.  We tried to keep in mind how we would react if he were another local celebrity, like the Chiefs quarterback or prominent politician.  It wasn’t easy and the discussions were emotional.

We received a handful of critical messages from viewers after our early evening news, complaining that the cause of death was not the public’s business and that we only reported it to make our competition “look bad.”  One suggested that WDAF “sue our asses.” continued…

Fillinger, a photojournalist at WITI, was arrested Sunday night at the scene of a house fire in Milwaukee. He was shooting video behind police tape when an officer requested he turn off the camera; Fillinger refused, resulting in a confrontation between the two (watch it here).

“Mr. Fillinger was doing nothing more than his job, on a public street, behind police and fire lines, within his rights and within reason,” RTDNA region 4&5 director Peggy Phillip wrote. “We respectfully request that all charges against Mr. Fillinger immediately be dropped, and that you conduct an investigation of the incident and bring disciplinary action against the officers involved if necessary.” continued…
