Linda Danna Named General Manager at WHAS

Linda Danna has been named president and general manager of WHAS, Belo’s ABC affiliate in Louisville.

Danna joins the station from KGPE, the CBS affiliate in Fresno, where she has been president and general manager for four years. In a statement announcing the hire, Belo president of media operations Peter Diaz called Danna “an outstanding leader who is keenly aware of the evolving media landscape and its emerging opportunities.”

Danna has had a long career in local news. Prior to her time at KGPE, she was director of sales and interim general manager for WOAI in San Antonio. She has also served as GM of WWJ-WKBD in Detroit and of WUPA in Atlanta. continued…

Belo Introduces New GMs at KMOV and WWL

Belo today announced the appointments of two new general managers at its stations in St. Louis and New Orleans.

Mark Pimentel has been named president and general manager of KMOV, Belo’s St. Louis CBS-affiliate, and Tod Smith has been tapped as president and GM of WWL in New Orleans, as well as MyNetworkTV sister station WUPL.

“Both Mark Pimentel and Tod Smith are outstanding leaders and have delivered noteworthy results throughout their careers,” said Peter Diaz, Belo’s president of media operations, announcing the hires. continued…

Allan Cohen to Retire From KMOV After 32 Years as General Manager

Allan Cohen, the president and general manager of Belo’s KMOV, will retire at the end of the month after more than three decades at the St. Louis CBS-affiliate.

Cohen was hired as general manager of KMOV in 1980, making his “one of the longest tenures of any broadcasting executive in the nation,” according to a statement announcing his retirement. His last day will be May 31.

“Under Allen Cohen’s leadership, KMOV rose from a modest television operation to become one the most watched CBS stations in the country,” Belo president of media operations Peter Diaz said. “Allan and his staff have made KMOV an indispensable part of the St. Louis community.” continued…

Belo Ups WFAA’s Michael Valentine to VP Position

Belo has named former WFAA news director Michael Valentine vice president of content for the company.

Valentine has been with Belo since 2002 when he became news director of WVEC, the company’s ABC station in Hampton-Norfolk. He moved to WFAA in 2005.

In the newly created position, Valentine will “direct news content strategies across multiple platforms” for Belo’s 15 markets.

In announcing the move, Belo president of media operations Peter Diaz remarked that Valentine has “delivered remarkable results” throughout his tenure at the company.

B&C: Investigative Reporting Resurgent in Local News

Broadcasting & Cable takes a look (subscription required) today at the resurgent state of investigative journalism in local newsrooms. Three years after the financial collapse, which hit local stations especially hard, B&C finds the conditions of the media landscape are prime for new teams of investigative reporters and producers:

A handful of media trends pave the way for stations to reinvigorate their investigative efforts. First, the sorry state of newspapers, which have lost 30% of their workforce since 2000 according to the Pew Research Center’s recent “State of the Media” survey, opens the door for stations to pick up enterprise reporting slack. The same survey showed local TV is the “outlet of choice” for 55% of respondents, far more than the Internet (16%) and newspapers (14%).

There is no shortage of stories about government waste and civic corruption, but with print newsrooms often a shell of their former selves, there may be a shortage of reporters there to ferret them out. continued…
