Nick Nicholson Named VP and General Manager at WFTS

NickNicholsonNick Nicholson is joining Tampa ABC affiliate WFTS as vice president and general manager.

Steve Wasserman, divisional general manager of Scripps Media and GM of WPTV, confirmed the move to TVSpy following an internal email he sent to WFTS staff this morning.

“Nick is a highly regarded media executive with an impressive track record of success in several competitive markets,” Wasserman writes. Nicholson spent 27 years with the Belo TV group, most recently as President/GM of KTVK/KASW in Phoenix. Before that, Nicholson ran WVEC in Norfolk, was GM of the Belo-owned Fox/UPN stations in Tucson, and VP of Sales at Belo flagship WFAA in Dallas/Ft. Worth. Gannett acquired Belo late last year.

Nicholson replaces Rich Pegram who was shown the door last month after 7 years as WFTS GM. Nicholson’s first day in Tampa is Monday.

Rich Pegram Out as GM at Tampa’s WFTS

ABC_Action_News_generic_20121113091948_320_240Tampa-St. Petersburg ABC affiliate WFTS has dismissed general manager Rich Pegram, with station owner Scripps telling the Tampa Bay Times “Rich is no longer with the Scripps corporation.”

Pegram, 63, led WFTS Channel 28 as it surged in ratings in recent years. He joined WFTS after 26 years with top NBC affiliate WTHR in Indianapolis and CBS affiliate WTVR in Richmond, Va.

WFTS Channel 28 is owned and operated by E. W. Scripps Co., a media conglomerate that includes such properties as HGTV, the Food Network and various ABC and CBS affiliate TV stations. A recent spinoff contains the company’s daily and community newspapers.

Pegram had been GM at WFTS for seven years.

Bill McFarland Named News Director at WFTS

Bill McFarland is stepping into the role of news director at WFTS, the ABC affiliate in Tampa Bay.

McFarland comes from WABC, the ABC O&O in New York City, where he is the assistant news director. He replaces Doug Culver, who left WFTS for WJLA in June.

“Bill brings over 20-years of successful news management experience in large market television newsrooms,” WFTS general manager Rich Pegram said in a statement.  “I am confident that his commitment to quality journalism and his leadership abilities will help ABC Action News continue our remarkable ratings momentum of the past year.”

McFarland said he is “looking forward to joining the news team at one of the best stations in America.” Read more

Meteorologist Shay Ryan Joins WFTS From WNYW

Meteorologist Shay Ryan is joining WFTS, the ABC-affiliate in Tampa, next month.

Ryan, a Florida native, joins WFTS from WNYW in New York City. She will begin as the station’s morning meteorologist on August 13.

“Shay’s weather knowledge, combined with her great television and online skills, make her a perfect fit to forecast our unique weather patterns here in the Bay area and help people get started with their day,” general manager Rich Pegram said in a statement.

News Director Doug Culver Leaving WFTS

Doug Culver, who has been the news director at WFTS since 2008, is set to leave the Tampa ABC-affiliate.

In an email to staff this week, Culver announced that he would be departing in two weeks.

“Sometimes opportunity knocks at the most unexpected time,” Culver told his staff.  “That’s what has just happened to me.  As a result I will be leaving Action News.”

Before joining WFTS, Culver spent nine years at Seattle’s KIRO, serving as the station’s assistant news director and managing editor.  KIRO is currently looking for someone to replace Todd Mokhtari, who left his ND post last week to join KNBC. Read more
