NYC Stations Cover East Harlem Explosion

Stations in New York City spent several hours this morning covering a building explosion in East Harlem that caused the death of at least two people.

ABC-owned WABC was the first to report the news, breaking in to “Live! With Kelly and Michael” at 9:43 a.m. Ken Rosato and Michelle Charlesworth anchored. WABC had Kimberly Richardson, Rob Nelson and Sarah Wallace on the scene and Marcus Solis live from Harlem Hospital.

CBS-owned WCBS reported the explosion at 9:45 a.m., breaking into “The Queen Latifah Show” for a report anchored by Chris Wragge and Mary Calvi. Don Champion, Hazel Sanchez and John Slattery reported from East Harlem.

NBC-owned WNBC broke in to the fourth hour of “Today” with the news at 9:48 a.m. Michael Gargiulo anchored, with Jonathan Vigliotti, Michael George, Tracie Stahan and Telemundo’s Pablo Gutierrez reporting.

Greg Kelly and Rosanna Scotto reported the news at 9:49 on Fox-owned WNYW. Liz Dahlem and Ti-Hua Chang reported for the station from the scene.

CW affiliate WPIX reported the news at 9:53 a.m. with Kori Chambers, Dan Mannarino and Sukanya Krishnan anchoring. James Ford reported from East Harlem.

ABC News’ Rob Nelson Joining WABC as Weekend Morning Anchor

rob nelson abcABC News correspondent Rob Nelson is joining WABC, the ABC owned station in New York City, TVSpy has confirmed.

According to a memo from WABC news director Camille Edwards obtained by TVSpy, Nelson will be a weekend morning co-anchor and reporter. He will begin in the new year, replacing Phil Lipof, who is joining WCVB in Boston. News of the move was first reported by FTVLive.

It is a return to local news for Nelson, who joined ABC News from WWL in New Orleans in 2010. He anchored “World News Now,” ABC’s overnight newscast, until earlier this year, when he became a correspondent for all the network’s platforms.

It’s Official: WMAQ’s Paula Faris Joining ABC News As ‘World News Now’ Anchor and ‘GMA’ Contributor

WMAQ sports anchor Paula Faris is joining ABC News as co-anchor of “World News Now.”

Faris will co-anchor ABC’s overnight newscast with Rob Nelson, an ABC spokesperson confirms to TVSpy. Additionally, Faris will contribute “on a consistent basis” to “Good Morning America,” according to Matthew Kingsley, Faris’ agent.

Faris signed off from WMAQ, the NBC O&O in Chicago, earlier this month. News of her hire at ABC News has been widely reported since October, when Time Out Chicago’s Robert Feder first broke the news. ABC tells TVSpy an official announcement will be made in the near future.

Faris will join former WMAQ colleague Ginger Zee at ABC News. Zee joined “GMA” as weekend weather anchor in November.

Veteran Member of WWL Production Team Dies at 61

Alvin Gauthier Jr., a 39-year veteran of the production department at New Orleans CBS-affiliate WWL, died on Wednesday of natural causes. He was 61.

Gauthier worked at WWL from 1971-2009. Before he retired, he was the floor director and studio camera operator for the morning and noon newscasts.

“On a show like the morning show, with so many guests … sometimes it’s like a three-ring circus in that studio,” WWL anchor Eric Paulsen told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “He was a born leader.”

Rob Nelson, who left WWL last year to join ABC’s “World News Now,” told the Times-Picayune Gauthier was a mentor to him. Read more
