KUTV Celebrates the End of Cancer Treatments for Morning Anchor Mary Nickles

Salt Lake City CBS-affiliate KUTV took a moment during the morning newscast today to celebrate anchor Mary Nickles (center), who just completed seven months of breast cancer treatment (video above).

Nickles had chemotherapy and 30 rounds of radiation over her seven months of treatment — and only missed five days of work along the way. Her co-anchor Ron Bird (right) and meteorologist Lindsay Storrs (left) presented her with cookies from a local bakery.

“You’ve been such an inspiration for this whole thing,” Storrs told Nickles. “Your attitude has been so great.”

KUTV Says Facebook Helped Propel Station to Salt Lake City Ratings Victory

At the beginning of February, KUTV‘s morning team announced that they would be competing in a “Facebook Faceoff,” a race featuring anchors Ron Bird and Mary Nickles, reporters Kelly Chapman and Casey Scott, and meteorologist Debbie Worthen to see who could rack up the most Likes on Facebook.

The “Facebook Faceoff” was part of an aggressive push by the Salt Lake City  CBS-affiliate to increase viewer engagement on Facebook, which would hopefully offer a ratings boost as KUTV tried to wrestle the crown from former powerhouse KSL during the February sweeps period.

It looks like KUTV’s Facebook campaign paid off.

“I think social media helped KUTV 2News win every newscast during February sweeps,” KUTV news director Jennifer Dahl told Lost Remote recently. “We have a strategy and it’s working.” Read more

KUTV’s Morning Team Locked in a ‘Facebook Faceoff’

The morning news team at Salt Lake City’s KUTV has devised an interesting way to gain fans on Facebook: this week they started a “Facebook Faceoff” in which anchors Ron Bird and Mary Nickles, reporters Kelly Chapman and Casey Scott, and meteorologist Debbie Worthen are pitted against one another in a race to garner the most Likes.

KUTV has been promoting the competition on the Facebook page of “2News This Morning” and has posted quirky videos (Bird’s is above) in which each person lobbies for a thumbs-up on Facebook.

So far, Worthen, whose Faceoff campaign is built on the universal likability of her bangs, is in the lead with a little over 4,800 Likes.
