FCC Approves Sale of WUPW, Layoffs Likely to Follow

The FCC has approved the sale of WUPW, bringing the Toledo Fox-affiliate one step closer to an expected round of layoffs.

The Toledo Blade reports that the $22 million deal for WUPW between LIN Media, the station’s current owner, and American Spirit Media was approved on Monday. Attached to the deal is a shared services agreement with Raycom Media, which owns the market’s CBS-affiliate, WTOL.

As WUPW’s new owner pools its resources with WTOL, as many as 63 people could lose their jobs. A formal announcement about the shared services agreement is expected next week.

Toledo’s WUPW to Lay Off 63 Employees

Toledo Fox-affiliate WUPW will reportedly lay off 63 employees when the station changes ownership this spring.

The Toledo Blade reports that Ohio state officials have been informed of planned layoffs at WUPW when a deal for the station between American Spirit Media and LIN Media is finalized in the coming months.

American Spirit, a Charlotte-based company run by Thomas Henson, who owns a handful of stations across the country, is buying WUPW from LIN for $22 million. LIN has owned and operated the station since 2002. continued…

KOLD Set to Take Over KMSB Newscasts Tomorrow

As the result of a recently struck shared services agreement in Tucson, CBS-affiliate KOLD will take over production of newscasts on Fox-affiliate KMSB beginning tomorrow, February 1st.

KOLD has already rebranded its website “Tucson News Now” to reflect the joint news operation and, starting tomorrow, the station will produce a one-hour 9 p.m. newscast on KMSB, as well as a new, two-hour weekday morning show that will run from 7 to 9 a.m.

The 9 p.m. newscast will be anchored by Scott Kilbury during the week and Chris Holmstrom on the weekends. Kilbury currently anchors KOLD’s 4 p.m. newscast, alongside Heather Rowe, and Holmstrom has been a reporter with the station since August. continued…

In West Palm Beach, WPTV and WFLX Expand Relationship

Raycom Media and Scripps have entered into a new shared services agreement for WPTV and WFLX in West Palm Beach, FL.

Under the deal, Scripps’ WPTV, a NBC-affiliate, will provide “technical, promotional and online operations and certain local programming” for Raycom’s WFLX, a Fox-affiliate.

Since the beginning of the year, WPTV has been producing 17 hours of WFLX-branded newscasts each week and the new agreement is an expansion of this relationship.

“This is a mutually beneficial arrangement because the enhanced relationship allows WFLX to operate more efficiently while giving WPTV the opportunity to generate more revenue from its staff and infrastructure,” said Brian Lawlor, senior vice president of television for Scripps.
