Boston Stations Deliver Special Coverage of Service For Bombing Victims

Boston stations provided special coverage of an interfaith prayer service honoring the victims of the marathon bombings at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross Thursday morning.

All four provided rolling coverage throughout the morning, beginning with the morning newscasts and extending into the 10 a.m. hour. President Obama landed at Logan Airport around 10:15 a.m., about 45 minutes before the scheduled start of the service.

Jonathan Elias and Lisa Hughes anchored on CBS O&O WBZ. Gene Lavanchy and Sorboni Banerjee anchored on WFXT, while Kayna Whitworth and Christa Delcamp anchored on WHDH. Heather Unruh and Ed Harding anchored on ABC affiliate WCVB. All four stations had correspondents spread throughout the city to provide additional reporting from the ground.

Sorboni Banerjee to Join WFXT Morning Newscast

It’s official: beginning next month, Sorboni Banerjee will join the WFXT morning newscast, the Boston Fox O&O announced today.

News of Banerjee’s move was first reported in April. She joins WFXT from rival WHDH, the NBC-affiliate, where she has been a reporter and weekend anchor since 2006.

“Sorboni is one of the most recognizable and respected journalists in Boston and her talents and energy are a welcome addition to the FOX25 Morning News team,” WFXT vice president and news director Paul McGonagle said in a statement.

Banerjee will start at WFXT on June 11. She will serve as an anchor and reporter for the morning newscast, which also is co-hosted by Gene Lavanchy and Shannon Mulaire.

Sorboni Banerjee Leaving WHDH for Rival WFXT

Sorboni Banerjee is leaving Boston’s WHDH to join rival WFXT, the Boston Herald reports.

WHDH news director Linda Miele announced the news to station staffers yesterday, calling the anchor “a bright smile and bright mind in our newscasts,” according to the Herald. Banjerjee, a reporter and weekend anchor at WHDH, joined the NBC-affiliate in 2006.

Sources at WFXT tell TVSpy that Banerjee will join the Fox O&O’s morning newscast alongside Shannon Mulaire and Gene Lavanchy.

WHDH Auditions Current Anchors For Seats Vacated by Frances Rivera and Matt Lorch

An extensive search is underway to fill the open anchor seats at Boston’s WHDH, according to The Boston Globe. The station is testing out in-house talent to fill anchor positions vacated by Frances Rivera, who was the late evening anchor, and Matt Lorch, who was the early evening anchor at the Sunbeam-owned NBC affiliate.

The station has been heavily rotating its normal anchor lineup, switching Anne Allred (left), Amanda Grace, Adam Williams and Sorboni Banerjee between weekday and weekend mornings and evenings to test the talent in a variety of different positions.

“We feel like we have a lot of good options both internally and externally,” WHDH VP-GM Chris Wayland told The Globe. He said the station is looking at a variety of factors, including viewer feedback, focus group data and on-air chemistry with Kim Khazei, who currently anchors the evening broadcast.

Rivera and Lorch both announced their departure this month — Rivera on July 14 and Lorch on July 21. Rivera will join New York City’s WPIX, while Lorch will head west to join KCPQ in Seattle.
