John DeSimone Named GM at WMSN

wmsn4John DeSimone has joined WMSN, Sinclair Broadcast Group’s FOX affiliate in Madison, Wis, as general manager. Steve Marks, co-chief operating officer of Sinclair’s television group, announced the news:

“John has a proven track record of inspiring his sales teams and providing them with the appropriate support and systems to be successful while building relationships with key clients, which resulted in increased billings and revenue shares at the stations he was leading. We are excited to have him join the Sinclair team at WMSN,” Marks said.

DeSimone spent the past three years as vice president/general manager of national sales at Azteca America.

“I am thrilled to be joining Sinclair as the General Manager of its Madison, Wisconsin station,” DeSimone said. “Sinclair is at the vanguard of ‘new and innovative’ in the broadcast industry, and I look forward to utilizing the Company’s vast resources and working with the talented team at WMSN to the benefit of the Madisontelevision viewers and the community at large.”

Sinclair Fills GM Roles in Mobile-Pensacola and Birmingham

Sinclair BroadcastIts been a busy week for Sinclair Broadcast Group. Today it announced J.C. Lowe has been named GM of Mobile-Pensacola ABC affiliate WEAR and MyTV affiliate WFGX. The group also tapped GM of Birmingham ABC affiliate WBMA, Mike Murphy, to replace Lowe as GM of CW affiliate WTTO and MyTV affiliate WABM. Murphy will also oversee WDBB which is a simulcast operated by Sinclair under a local marketing agreement. He will stay on as GM of WBMA.

“I look forward to J.C. overseeing our stations in Pensacola. He has done a terrific job in Birmingham, and we are confident that he can continue our leadership position in Pensacola,” Steve Marks co-chief operating officer of Sinclair’s Television Group said in a statement. “Mike is a natural choice to assume oversight of the stations J.C. managed and to broaden his responsibilities in Birmingham.”

Since 2007, Lowe has been working as GM of Sinclair’s Birmingham stations. Before that, he was the GSM of KAUT in Oklahoma City. He has also worked as GM and GSM of KEYE in Austin.

Murphy has been the GM of former Allbritton station WBMA since 2004. He was GSM there from 2002 until 2004. He has also worked at WSMV in Nashville in various sales roles.

James Killen Named Sinclair Group Manager

Sinclair BroadcastSinclair Broadcast Group has named James Killen Group Manager of Tulsa, OK, Little Rock, AR, Roanoke-Lynchburg, VA and “other markets to be determined.”

“Having held a key sales management position at Allbritton and given his familiarity with the stations and staff, he is the perfect choice to continue with us as a Group Manager overseeing some of these same markets we recently acquired,” Steve Marks, co-chief operating officer of Sinclair’s TV group said in a statement. “We look forward to building upon that foundation and expanding our market presence.”

Since 2004, Killen has been VP of Sales for Allbritton, overseeing seven stations as well as NewsChannel 8 and Politico. He’s also worked as local sales manager and New York national sales manager at WNBC in New York, and as an account executive at WRAL in Raleigh-Durham and WECT in Wilmington, NC.

Sinclair Names New GMs in Washington, DC and Columbus Markets

sinclair_304Sinclair Broadcast Group has named Dan Mellon GM of its Washington, D.C. ABC affiliate WJLA and local cable news network NewsChannel 8.

The station group also named Tony D’Angelo GM of Columbus, OH, ABC affiliate WSYX.

“I am excited to announce the promotions of Dan and Tony,” Steve Marks, Sinclair’s co-chief operating officer said in a statement. “They have been loyal employees of the Company with a history of success in leading our stations, especially in Columbus, one of our largest and most important markets.”

Since 2006, Mellon has been group manager of Sinclair’s stations. He was GM of WSYX from 2005 until 2006 and was also responsible for oversight into WTTE. D’Angelo had been director of sales at WSYX, WTTE and WWHO in Columbus since 2003.

Greg Conner Named GM of WXLV-WMYV

wxlv logoSinclair Broadcast Group has named Greg Conner general manager of WXLV and WMYV, the ABC and MyNetworkTV affiliates in Winston-Salem, N.C.

“Throughout my career I have found that hard work, dedication and delivering results has consistently led to amazing opportunities, especially with a company like Sinclair,” Conner said in a statement. ”I have always had aspirations to become a General Manager, and I am excited to be joining the team at WXLV and WMYV and leading them in their future successes.”

Conner has worked for Sinclair for 14 years, most recently as the director of sales at KVCW-KVMY in Las Vegas. Before that, he was local sales manager at WLOS-WMYA in Asheville-Greenville-Spartanburg.

“Greg has proven himself to be a strong leader, manager and salesperson and has a consistent track record of training, managing and motivating his teams to achieve or exceed their goals throughout his 18 years in media.  We are excited to have him join the team in Greensboro,” Steve Marks, co-chief operating officer of Sinclair’s television group, said.

Doug Gealy Named Group Manager by Sinclair

sinclair_304Sinclair Broadcast Group has named Doug Gealy group manager.

As group manager, Gealy will oversee Sinclair’s stations in the Washington, D.C, Raleigh, NC, and Richmond, VA, markets.

“Doug is a very seasoned broadcaster bringing 31 years of broadcast television experience, including 24 years of broadcast executive experience to Sinclair,” Steve Marks chief operating officer of Sinclair’s TV group said in a statement.

Gealy was founder of ACME Communications and served as and president, CEO and COO from 1997 until 2013.Before that he was EVP of Benedek Broadcasting. Between 1989 and 1996, he served as VP and GM of WHOI in Peoria, IL, and then president and GM of WCMH and WWHO in Columbus, OH.

Sinclair Names GM of WICD-WCCU

Sinclair Broadcasting Group has named Scott McBride general manager of its ABC and FOX affiliates in Champaign, IL, WICD and WCCU.

“Scott’s success in operating an ABC/FOX combination, along with his 33 year of television experience working in creative services, news and sales, is the perfect complement towards the stations being successful and meeting the needs of the Champaign/Urbana community,” said COO of Sinclair’s television group Steve Marks.

McBride, who will also oversee the sales team at CW affiliate WBUI, comes to WICD-WCCU from Sinclair’s ABC and FOX affiliate in Savannah, GA, WJCL-WTGS. Before that he was the vice-president and general manager at WACH in Columbia, SC. He was also the general sales manager at KOLD in Tucson, AZ, and creative services and new account executive at KSBW in Salinas, CA.

Terry Gaughan Returns as General Manager for WCGV-WVTV

Sinclair Broadcast Group has named Terry Gaughan general manager of Milwaukee CW and MyTV affiliates WCGV-WVTV.

“We are excited to have Terry re-join the Company,” said Steve Marks, chief operating officer of Sinclair Television Group. “He is familiar with the stations, having served as their General Manager years ago. We believe his knowledge of the Milwaukee community can only help to advance meeting their needs.”

Gaughan worked at Sinclair in various roles from 1992 to 1998 including general manager of WVTV and WCGV. He was most recently vice president of national sales at Univision.

“I am delighted to be back in Milwaukee and at WCGV and WVTV,” said Gaughan in a statement. “I believe that there is much the stations have to offer the local community, and I look forward to working with the staff to achieve that goal.”

Ronna Corrente Named GM at WDKY

Ronna Corrente has been promoted to general manager at WDKY, Sinclair’s Fox affiliate in Lexington, Ky.

Corrente has worked at the station for 17 years, most recently as general and local sales manager. She replaces Michael Brickey, who had been general manager since 2006.

“We are excited to promote Ronna to General Manager of the station. She has been an integral part of the station’s success over the years, she knows the market, its viewing habits and how to connect our business partners with our audience,” Sinclair COO Steve Marks said in a statement. “We look forward to building on her experience and relationships.”

Jim Lapiana Named GM of Pittsburgh’s WPGH

Sinclair Broadcast Group has named Jim Lapiana general manager of Pittsburgh FOX affiliate WPGH and MyNetworkTV affiliate WPMY.

“I am thrilled and excited to lead the stations and serve in a higher capacity,Lapiana said in a statement. “The stations are an integral part of the Pittsburgh community, and I look forward to continuing our focus of meeting viewers’ needs and helping our local businesses spread their messages.”

Lapiana, who succeeds group manager Alan Frank, was the director of sales for the two Pittsburgh stations.  Before coming to WPGH in 2001, he served as general manager of WPXT in Portland, ME. From 1994 to 1998 , he was general manager of WRDC and WLFL in Raleigh-Durham, NC. Read more
