Gray Moves NBC Affiliation to One Nebraska Station, Shuts Down the Other

New_Gray_304Gray Television has transferred its Lincoln, NE, NBC affiliation from newly purchased KHAS in Hastings, NE, to KSNB in Grand Island, NE.

KHAS GM Ulysses Carlini, Jr. said in a statement, “There is no dispute with any cable or satellite provider, who are really great partners with us. Rather, this over-the-air channel change will have minimal impact on viewers directly yet allow us to better serve Central Nebraska going forward.”

KHAS had been the NBC affiliate for Lincoln-Kearney-Hastings market since 1956. It was purchased by Excalibur Broadcasting, a sidecar of Gray, from Hoak Media in November. The station will now go dark.

“The move of KHAS’s programming and great staff to KSNB-TV allows us to serve all of Nebraska in truly unprecedented ways,” said Susan Ramsett, Gray VP and GM. Read more

KNPL Set to Debut Evening Newscasts

Gray Television’s CBS affiliate in North Platte, Neb., debuts local newscasts tonight. KNPL’s 6:30 and 10 p.m. broadcasts will be the area’s first high definition local news.

“The launch of KNPL-TV means North Platte now has its own local CBS affiliate, with its own news team, sales/marketing team, and creative services department,” general manager Susan Ramsett said in a statement. “We’re excited to be here and are looking forward to serving the viewers, businesses and organizations that call North Platte home.”

Adam Uhernik and Kristin Bauer will anchor the newscasts with meteorologist Rusty Dawkins.

KOLN-KGIN Anchor Vanessa Flowers Diagnosed With Vocal Cord Paralysis

KOLN-KGIN anchor Vanessa Flowers has been off the air for several months with a paralyzed right vocal cord. The noon and 5 p.m. anchor tells the Lincoln Journal Star about her problems with her voice, which began in January with no warning:

“I was going on the 5 o’clock news, and my voice … I didn’t feel bad,” she remembered. “There was nothing leading up to to it. There were no signs or symptoms. I wasn’t coughing or sneezing — no signs of any problems.

“But about five minutes before we hit the air, I started practicing a little and wondered ‘What’s going on?’” The weather guys, she said, had a bet as to whether or not she would make it through the newscast.

“I was, like, I’m going to get this,” she recalled. “Sure enough, by the end of the newscast my voice was gone, and the next day you couldn’t understand a word I said. I couldn’t talk at all.”

Flowers, who is being treated at University of Nebraska Medical Center, is hopeful that her voice will return. In the meantime, she has been producing and writing at the Lincoln duopoly. Read more

Anchor Promoted to News Director at WSAW

Mikel Lauber has been promoted to news director at WSAW. Lauber, who joined the station in 2007, currently anchors the CBS-affiliate’s 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts.

“I’m excited and fortunate to lead this veteran newsroom,” Lauber said, “and look forward to elevating the level of news coverage for the viewers in Northcentral Wisconsin.”

Last year, Lauber, a Wisconsin native, was named assistant news director to Susan Ramsett, whom he replaces. Ramsett left WSAW this spring after leading the newsroom for four years.

During his time with WSAW, Lauber has been honored several times for his investigative reporting, receiving a Murrow award in 2008 and Emmy nominations in ’08 and ’09.

Susan Ramsett Named KOLN-KGIN News Director

Susan Ramsett has been named news director of Gray Television’s KOLN-KGIN in Lincoln.

Since 2007, Ramsett has served as news director and anchor for Gray’s WSAW in Wausau, WI. She joined the CBS-affiliate ten years ago as an anchor and producer.

Ramsett replaces Jerry Howard, who served as KOLN-KGIN’s news director for three years before departing earlier this year.

KOLN-KGIN is a joint CBS-affiliate, with KGIN operating as a satellite station for areas west of Lincoln-based KOLN.

“Being offered a promotion within Gray Television is an exciting professional challenge!” Ramsett said in a recent blog post on WSAW’s website. “But leaving this station and a community I love is bittersweet.” Read more
