Bob Slovak is the new weekend sports anchor at KTRK in Houston, Houston media blogger Mike McGuff reports.

Slovak has worked at the ABC O&O since 1998. Tim Melton, who has been off the air since 2011 recovering from a stroke, was previously the weekend sports anchor. Melton announced his exit from KTRK last month.

Sportscaster Tim Melton Announces His Exit From KTRK

Tim Melton, a veteran sportscaster at KTRK who has been off the air recovering from a stroke, told the Houston Chronicle that his contract with the ABC O&O has expired.

Houston media blogger Mike McGuff first spotted the absence of Melton’s bio on the KTRK website Thursday. Melton joined KTRK in 1981 and suffered a stroke in 2011.

“I can do a lot of things, but not everything the job requires,” Melton said. “I still hope to get back on the air. That’s always been my plan. The problem is that you never know how things are going to play out, and while the recovery process has been good, it has taken longer than I would have imagined.”

Sports Reporter David Nuno Filling In on KTRK

Houston’s KTRK has tapped David Nuno as a temporary fill-in sports reporter, the Houston Chronicle reports.

The station is short-staffed since weekend sports director Tim Melton suffered a stroke in October. Melton has not been on the air since. He told viewers last month that he is “getting better every day,” but no date has been slated for his return to the ABC O&O.

Nuno is a sports host for local radio station KGOW, as well as for Yahoo! Sports Radio. He has previous television experience at KXXV in Waco.

KTRK’s Tim Melton Recovering From Stroke

KTRK weekend sports director Tim Melton, who has not been on the air since October, announced yesterday that he suffered a stroke last fall.

“I thank all of you who have expressed your concern as to what caused my absence, but I wanted to wait until I had a good sense of what the future holds before saying anything,” Melton wrote on Facebook. “I’m happy to report I’m getting better every day.”

Melton did not specify when he will return to the station. KTRK hired Hugh Lewis to fill in for Melton in December, according to Houston media blogger Mike McGuff.

Melton joined the Houston ABC O&O in 1981.

Former KVUE Sports Director Hugh Lewis Now Reporting for KTRK

A new face has popped up on KTRK, one that is familiar to many Texas viewers.

Hugh Lewis, who served as sports director at Austin’s KVUE in the 80s, recently began working as a sports reporter for the Houston ABC O&O.

As Houston media blogger Mike McGuff points out, Lewis is joining a team that has been without veteran sports anchor Tim Melton since October.

KTRK could use the extra help with a handful of big sports stories happening in the market, including the first ever NFL playoff berth by the Houston Texans. Read more
