KEYT Wins Must-Carry Case Against Time Warner Cable

Viewers in western Ventura County, just North of Los Angeles, will now be able to see their favorite ABC shows in HD thanks to KEYT‘s owners pressing Time Warner Cable to fully honor its must-carry agreement with the station.

Time Warner had been broadcasting the Santa Barbara ABC affiliate’s HD signal to the eastern part of Ventura County which is in the stations DMA. But according to RBR-TVR blog,

The station has a special market definition that makes certain otherwise non-market communities part of its own individual market pursuant to an FCC modification dating back to 1995 – and as such, it wants its HD signal carried on the local TWC system.

Hearst TV, Time Warner Cable Fail to Reach Retrans Agreement

Despite extending talks for more than a week past the original expiration of their retransmission consent contract, Time Warner Cable and Hearst were unable to come to an agreement by midnight yesterday, leaving 13 stations unavailable on the cable provider today.

“Time Warner Cable has reached hundreds of agreements with other broadcasters without broadcaster blackouts, but Hearst’s demand for a nearly 300% increase is way out of line,” a Time Warner statement released last night reads. “That kind of outrageous increase is unfair to our customers and unsustainable for our business.”

Hearst has statements informing viewers on each respective station’s website. continued…

WDRB Ends Time Warner Blackout

Louisville Fox-affiliate WDRB, along with its MyNetworkTV sister station, WMYO, is back on Insight Cable, which is owned by Time Warner Cable.

WDRB’s owner, Block Communications, reached a new carriage agreement with Time Warner this week, ending a blackout that began last Friday.

“I couldn’t be happier to have this process completed,” WDRB president and general manager Bill Lamb said in a statement. “I know the last several days have been trying for our viewers who are Insight subscribers, and we’ve shared their pain. It’s good to know that–despite our differences– both sides were ultimately able to finally reach a fair resolution.” continued…

Louisville Stations Go Dark on Time Warner

Two stations in Louisville have gone dark on Time Warner Cable, after the stations owner, Block Communications, was unable to reach a new retrans deal with the cable operator.

Fox-affiliate WDRB and MyNetworkTV-affiliate WMYO were pulled from Time Warner after Block’s previous carriage agreement expired on May 31st.

“WDRB has tried very hard to reach an agreement with Time Warner but the deadline has passed,” the station announced in a post on its website today. “After much negotiating, Time Warner has decided to reject our repeated offers leaving many of our viewers without a local TV station you like.” continued…

Time Warner to Produce New WXLV Newscast as Part of Sinclair Retrans Deal

Sinclair Broadcast Group announced today that it has finalized a new, multi-year retrans agreement with Time Warner Cable.

The new deal covers 28 stations that Sinclair owns and/or operates in 17 markets.

Sinclair and TWC reached a tentative agreement two weeks ago, quieting the threat of a black-out for roughly 4 million cable subscribers.

In addition to the deal, Sinclair announced that TWC would begin producing three half-hour newscasts for ABC-affiliate WXLV in Greensboro/Winston-Salem, NC. WXLV had been the only ABC-affiliate under Sinclair without a regular news operation.

In 1995, WXLV established a news department and began airing newscasts at 6 and 11 p.m. Due to poor ratings, though, the news operation shut down in 2002. continued…

Sinclair Prepares to Pull 33 Stations from Time Warner Cable

With Sinclair Broadcast Group‘s retrans negotiations with Time Warner Cable going down to the wire, the company is prepared to pull 33 stations from the cable operator’s systems at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s.

TWC recently rejected an offer that would increase the monthly station license fee by roughly 10 cents per subscriber. According to Sinclair, TWC has yet to make a counter-proposal.

The Baltimore-based company owns 20 Fox, 17 MyTV, 9 ABC, 9 CW, 2 CBS affiliates as well as one NBC affiliate. They have stations in many top markets, including Minneapolis-St. Paul, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati.

Barry Faber, Sinclair’s EVP and general counsel bemoaned TWC’s hard line negotiating. “We simply do not understand why Time Warner insists on being treated better than its competition, rather than accepting our equitable proposal to provide them equivalent or better pricing than is paid by their competition,” he said.
