Jill Manuel Named Assistant ND at WFLD

manuel_wewsJill Manuel has been named assistant news director for WFLD, the Fox-owned station in Chicago. Her appointment is effective April 15.

Manuel joins WFLD from WEWS in Cleveland, where she has been the news director since 2008. Manuel previously worked at CLTV and WBBM in Chicago. She has also worked as a senior producer for Fox News in Washington, D.C. and New York.

“I am thrilled to be returning to Chicago to work with the FOX 32 news team. I look forward to collaborating with them to produce quality journalism and tell stories that impact our audience on broadcast and digital platforms,” Manuel said in a statement.

“Jill is a seasoned news professional and leader, with a tremendous passion for storytelling and journalism. We look forward to her contributions to FOX 32,” news director Tom Doerr said.

Changes at WFLD: Bob Sirott Signing Off, Jeff Herndon Named Evening Co-Anchor

After three years at WFLD, Bob Sirott (left) will sign off from the Chicago Fox O&O next month.

Sirott’s future with the station has been the subject of speculation since he was announced as the co-host of a daily radio show on WGN. His last day anchoring the 9 p.m. newscast alongside Robin Robinson will be September 5.

“Bob is a talented journalist who has brought dedication and passion to the station every day. We want to thank him for his tremendous contributions; he will always be a member of the FOX 32 family,” WFLD vice president and general manager Dennis Welsh wrote to TVSpy.

Taking over for Sirott will be Jeff Herndon (right), who will begin October 1 as Robinson’s co-anchor on the evening newscast. Herndon comes to Chicago after 12 years in Wichita, where he is the evening co-anchor at ABC affiliate KAKE. He has also worked at KTKA in Topeka.

“Jeff is an outstanding communicator and journalist with a proven track record of excellence. He is a leader and sought after journalist and we are excited to welcome him to this role at FOX 32,” WFLD vice president and news director Tom Doerr said in a statement.

Sports Anchor Keith Calkins Out at KRIV

Keith Calkins, sports anchor for Houston FOX owned station KRIV, has announced he will be leaving.

Calkins announced the news on his facebook page saying, “Suffice it to say…I feel blessed and fortunate for the opportunities and support for the last two decades at KRIV-TV. I want to thank the viewers for 20 years of great support. And now it’s on to the next great challenge.”

Calkins joined KRIV in 1993 after working for the Dallas Cowboys for a year. Before that he worked as a sports anchor for KFDM in Beaumont, TX, and as a reporter and anchor for KHOU in Houston. Read more

Tom Doerr Named News Director at WFLD

Tom Doerr has been named vice president and news director at WFLD, the Fox O&O in Chicago.

“Tom has a fresh approach to local news and an ability to recognize meaningful stories within a community. He is an exceptional leader, with a natural news instinct and a proven track record of success and we are excited to welcome him to our station,” WFLD VP-GM Dennis Welsh said in a statement.

Doerr comes from another Fox O&O, KRIV in Houston, where he has been vice president and news director since 2009. Before that, he spent three years as vice president and station manager of WFOR, the CBS O&O in Miami.

“There is no news town quite like Chicago; there is always something vibrant and exciting happening in this city.  I look forward to leading the talented team of committed journalists at FOX 32 in providing interesting and valuable news to viewers,” Doerr said.

Doerr replaces Phyllis Schwartz, who left WFLD in December.

Bob Morford Joins KRIV as Assistant News Director

Bob Morford is joining KRIV, the Fox O&O in Houston, as assistant news director. He begins his new role on August 6.

Morford joins the station from WCPO, the ABC-affiliate in Cincinnati, where he has been the news director for 11 years. Prior to that, he held the news director position at KNXV in Phoenix, WPXI in Pittsburgh and WLWT in Cincinnati.

“Bob is an accomplished news manager with more than 30 years of experience. His track record of excellence speaks for itself,” Tom Doerr, KRIV’s vice president and news director, said in a statement. “Bob will be a tremendous asset to our station and leader in the newsroom.”
