Michael Gargiulo stepped away from the WNBC anchor desk on Wednesday to visit Breezy Point, a beachfront area of Queens that was devastated during Hurricane Sandy. Gargiulo, whose parents own a home there, provided emotional coverage from the fire-ravaged town.

“You try to brace yourself for what you’re going to see, but I just could not brace myself for what I encountered here,” Gargiulo told Tom Llamas and Shiba Russell. “I’ve been coming here my entire life. I have to tell you, I just didn’t recognize where I was here in Breezy Point.”

“I have covered tornadoes, I have covered hurricanes and earthquakes. And not that these disasters are in competition with each other, but it’s shocking to see the impact on the people in the community. You see it here, and it is really sobering to see this devastation,” Garguilo continued, his voice thick with emotion. “And still in Breezy Point, two American flags still flying in the distance. And that’s Breezy Point for you.”

NYC Stations Go Live For Bloomberg Press Conference on Hurricane Sandy

As you may have heard, Hurricane Sandy is taking aim at the Eastern Seaboard and has the potential to merge with a strong cold front coming in from the west, putting the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions in danger of being hit by a “superstorm” (or a “Frankenstorm,” depending on how much you want to get into the Halloween spirit) next week.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg held a Friday afternoon press conference on the threat, calling Sandy a “large, unpredictable” storm and warning residents to be prepared. The five New York City stations all broke into their respective afternoon programming — “Dr. Phil” on WCBS, “Katie” on WABC, “Steve Harvey” on WNBC, “The People’s Court” on WNYW and “Maury” on WPIX — to broadcast the press conference. continued…

Shiba Russell Replacing Sue Simmons at WNBC

In a move that many have anticipated since she joined the station last year, Shiba Russell is replacing Sue Simmons on WNBC‘s 11 p.m. newscast.

During a monthly staff meeting that took place this morning, WNBC president and general manager Michael Jack announced that, “effective today, Shiba Russell will be expanding her responsibilities to include the 11 p.m. news.”

Russell has been co-anchoring WNBC’s weekday 5 p.m. newscast alongside Tom Llamas. At 11, she’ll pair with Simmons’s longtime co-anchor Chuck Scarborough, who recently had his contract renewed for another three years. continued…

New York Stations Go Live for Shuttle Landing

As a jet carrying the space shuttle Enterprise touched down today at JFK airport around 11:21 a.m. ET, every major news station in New York was carrying live coverage of its arrival.

Beginning at 10:30 a.m., WABC, WCBS, WNBC, and WNYW cut into their regularly scheduled programming to bring live coverage of the shuttle’s entry into New York City. On a windy day in which news helicopters were grounded, there was a noticeable split in how the stations covered the event: WABC and WCBS had multiple reporters in the field and the stations highlighted their team coverage, while WNBC and WNYW relied more heavily on the personalities in their respective studios. continued…

WNBC Names Shiba Russell and Tom Llamas Anchors of 5 p.m. Newscast

WNBC has named Shiba Russell and Tom Llamas the anchors of the 5 p.m. broadcast that will debut on the NBC owned-and-operated station September 12.

Russell currently anchors the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. weekend broadcasts and reports weekdays.

Llamas, who has been a general assignment reporter for WNBC since 2009, will be bumped up to anchor and will also become an NBC News correspondent as part of the promotion. Llamas has been with several NBCU entities: first as a production assistant at MSNBC, later an embed during the 2004 primaries covering the campaign of Rev. Al Sharpton, now MSNBC’s 6pm host, then being named a reporter at WTVJ in Miami before returning to New York and WNBC.

WNBC, which currently airs “New York Live” at 5 p.m., announced earlier this summer that the daily lifestyle show would slide back to 3 p.m. to make room for the additional newscast.
