CBS-Affiliate KTVT Boasts February Wins at Both 6 and 10 p.m.

CBS-affiliate KTVT won the nighttime news race in Dallas-Fort Worth with both its 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts finishing first in total viewers for the February sweeps period. This is the first time that both the 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts finished #1 in their respective time slots during a sweeps period.

KTVT was able to fend off longtime rival WFAA in both time periods, averaging 198,160 viewers at 6 and 237,550 viewers at 10. Both averages show significant increases from the previous year. The 10 p.m. newscast was up 22,620 viewers compared to February 2010 and 6 p.m. saw an increase of 56,970.

During the month, KTVT benefited from CBS’s strong primetime lineup while also receiving a boost from two former WFAA luminaries. Anchor Tracy Rowlett and meteorologist Troy Dungan, who both spent decades with WFAA before retiring recently, appeared in special segments with KTVT anchor Karen Borta during the week of February 14th.

In Dallas, KTVT Plans to Use Two WFAA Luminaries as Sweeps Fodder

KTVT is using a unique strategy in its 10 p.m. ratings battle against WFAA. The CBS-affiliate is set to feature two popular former WFAA staffers during the February sweeps period.

Anchor Tracy Rowlett (far right) and meteorologist Troy Dungan (right) will be profiled in their retirement years by KTVT anchor Karen Borta, according to Dallas media blog Uncle Barky’s Bytes. The special segments are set to air during the week of February 14th.

Dungan, 74, spent over 30 years with WFAA, serving as the station’s chief meteorologist before retiring in 2007.

Rowlett, 74, became WFAA’s marquee anchor in 1975, teaming with Iola Johnson to anchor the station’s highly rated 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts. He jumped to KTVT in 1999 and eventually retired in 2008. Read more
