Local Stations on Both Coasts Announce Plans to Raise Money for Hurricane Sandy Relief

Philadelphia’s KYW and Sacramento’s KCRA have both separately announced plans to provide disaster relief for those affected by Hurricane Sandy through the American Red Cross.

In Philadelphia, CBS O&O KYW will air cut-ins at the top of every hour and in newscasts from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. tomorrow. KYW’s Susan Barnett, Chris May, Pat Ciarrocchi, Ukee Washington and Erika von Tiehl, along with personalities from CW Philadelphia and the local CBS owned radio stations will staff a phone bank to take pledges for the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Response Fund.

In Sacramento, NBC affiliate KCRA will air live cut-ins asking for donations during regular programming and newscasts from 6 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Viewers in Sacramento can donate by calling 1-800-513-3333 or by texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Philadelphia viewers can call 1-877-KYW3-ASK (1-877-599-3275) or also texti the word REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10.

Philadelphia’s KYW Celebrates 80th Anniversary

KYW will celebrate 80 years on the air tomorrow. The Philadelphia CBS O&O signed on under its original call letters, W3XE, on June 28, 1932.

The station will do an anniversary salute tomorrow on “Talk Philly,” the lifestyle program that airs at noon. Ukee Washington, who is on medical leave after a hip replacement, will join co-host Pat Ciarrocchi from his physical therapy via remote.

“Although television stations are routinely focused on the here and now, it’s important to take a look back on milestones such as these and remember who we are,” KYW president-GM Jon Hitchcock said in a statement. “From the very first day, CBS 3 has been an innovator and community leader, something that is important to remember in the 21^st Century.”

Pat Ciarrocchi Celebrates 30 Years at KYW

KYW anchor Pat Ciarrochi celebrated her 30th anniversary with the Philadelphia CBS O&O today.

On “Talk Philly” this morning, Ciarrochi announced the establishment of a $1,000 journalism scholarship in her name at two schools — Padua Academy in Wilmington, DE and Neumann University in Aston, PA.

“I wanted to do something that was maybe a little different to celebrate my 30th anniversary,” she said. “So this is what I decided to do.”

“That’s a wonderful thing,” co-host Ukee Washington said. “So many people have watched you. So many people on my Facebook page, and yours, wanting to say congratulations.”

Ukee Washington Set to Mark 25 Years with KYW

Philadelphia’s KYW is preparing to celebrate anchor Ukee Washington‘s impressive 25-year tenure with the station. May 25th marks Washington’s quarter century with the station.

“Ukee is one of those rare newscasters that does everything well,” says Susan Schiller, KYW’s news director. “Whether it’s hosting a town hall meeting on the future of public education or joining a top chef for an in-studio cooking segment, Ukee brings the totality of his experience as the ultimate hometown anchor to the table.”

Born in West Philadelphia, Washington joined the CBS O&O in 1986 as a sports anchor. Ten years later he transitioned to news anchor of KYW’s morning and noon newscasts.

An Emmy award-winner, Washington was inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame in 2008.
