South Carolina Anchors Bree Boyce and Darryl Hood MIA from WACH

wach anchorsBree Boyce and Darryl Hood, the anchors for WACH 10:00 pm. news have gone missing from the Sinclair-owned Columbia, SC, FOX affiliate.

A check of TVeyes shows Boyce hasn’t been on-air since late June while Hood has been absent since July 1. Their bios have been removed from the station website. Sports director Brian McConchie has been anchoring the newscast.

As a former Miss South Carolina with no formal journalism experience, Boyce was a controversial hire at the station. The move prompted former WACH anchor Mike Woolfolk, now working for WXYZ in Detroit, to write a piece that was critical of the hire.

Hood had been with WACH since 2010. He started his career at Orange County Newschannel before working at KQTV in St. Joseph, MO. He has also worked in Las Vegas, NV, Los Angeles, CA, Denver, CO, and Memphis, TN.

Sinclair and WACH have not responded to emails asking if the two are still working for the station.

Sinclair Names GM of South Carolina Station

sinclair_304Sinclair Broadcast Group has named Allison Aldridge as general manager of its Columbia, SC, FOX station WACH.

Early in her career, Aldridge worked at WACH as an account executive.

“I am thrilled to return to FOX 57 as General Manager,” Aldridge said in a statement. “The team at WACH is dedicated, hard-working and talented. I am excited about the direction our station is headed and the resources available to it under Sinclair’s ownership.”

Sinclair bought WACH as part of its acquisition of 18 Barrington Broadcast Group stations in March.

Most recently, Aldridge helped Sinclair with its newly acquired station operations. Between 2008 and 2010, she was GM of Sinclair’s Charleston, SC, station WMMP and also oversaw WTAT. Before that she worked as GSM, local sales manager, national sales manager and account executive at those stations.

Former WACH Anchor Not Happy About Station Hiring Beauty Queen as Anchor

boyce_croppedMike Woolfolk, a former anchor for Columbia, SC, FOX affiliate WACH, had some things to say about his old station’s hiring of a former beauty queen with no formal journalism experience.

Woolfolk, who was an anchor at WACH from 1996 until 2010, wrote a response to an article in local weekly paper Free Times titled “The Camera Loves Her” which talks about the station hiring Bree Boyce as co-anchor of the 10:00 p.m. news.

“I was astounded when I first heard of this move by WACH-TV, my former employer, and I remain astounded to this day,” Woolfolk said on his blog.

“Students, forget about all that crap your college professors and other professionals who visited your classes told you about “paying your dues” or “having to cut your teeth in Podunkville, USA” before you get the chance to anchor a newscast in a place like Columbia, or better.  Don’t worry about learning the craft or gaining experience.  Just go out and do something that garners you major attention because those are the people television station general managers favor for anchor slots— one of the most high profile and significantly important jobs in the newsroom– over formally trained and experienced journalists.” Read more

The 2011 Miss South Carolina will join current anchors Darryl Hood, Brian McConchie and chief meteorologist Henry Rothenberg in October.

Boyce tweeted the news saying, “Excited to be working with these guys!! Darryl, Brian, and Henry! We are going to have fun!”

“Bree not only brings a fresh look to WACH FOX NEWS at TEN – she has a compelling story of personal success,” said Jim Bleicher WACH general manager. “As an Anchor/Reporter she will look for and produce similar stories from all over the Midlands. We’re very happy to have Bree join our team.”

Gaining National Attention, WACH Reports on Feud with Governor Nikki Haley

WACH‘s tiff with South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley picked up steam this week as the likes of Politico and The Huffington Post covered the back-and-forth stemming from a critical Facebook post.

Still waiting on an apology from Haley for describing the Fox-affiliate as a “tabloid news station,” WACH covered the online dust-up during a recent newscast (video above).

WACH’s War of Words with Governor Nikki Haley Sparks Online Debate

WACH’s recent story about a forthcoming book that contains details of Nikki Haley‘s alleged extramarital sex life set off a war of words this week between the newly elected Governor of South Carolina and the Columbia Fox-affiliate.

Now WACH viewers, armchair pundits, and Facebook fans are weighing in on the tiff, which included Haley’s assertion that WACH peddled “tabloid news.”

David Olmsted, WACH’s president and CEO, issued a statement on Tuesday calling for Haley to apologize.  The governor is standing by her comment on Facebook.

What do you think of WACH’s coverage and Haley’s criticism? Leave your comments below…

Here’s a collection of what people are saying so far:

I think the Govenor was restrained in her comments. ‘Sleazy’ is more apt description of WACH’s running of this story.

Perhaps WACH ‘News’ Director Bryan Cox should consider resigning or perhaps WACH’s owners should demand it –to signal viewers that WACH does indeed have some standards.

Thank you Mr. Cox for standing up for what is right.

This is exactly the type of newscasting that has average viewers throwing up their hands and asking for fairness in the media.

WACH Demands Public Apology from South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley

WACH, a Fox-affiliate in Columbia, SC, is demanding that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley apologize for a recent Facebook post in which she said the station “has no concept of journalism.”

The pointed criticism came after WACH posted a story about a new book from political advisor Will Folks, who claims that he had a sexual affair with Haley several years ago. Haley has vehemently denied Folks’s claims, which first surfaced last spring in the lead-up to the 2010 gubernatorial election, saying that she has been “100 percent faithful” to her husband.

David Olmsted, WACH’s president and CEO, issued the following statement regarding Haley’s Facebook comments:

The WACH Fox news department has published or broadcast more than 100 stories pertaining to Gov. Haley during the past year. Despite that voluminous amount of reporting, there is not a single documented instance of the governor challenging the accuracy of any fact in any of those reports. Read more

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley Calls Fox-Affiliate WACH ‘a Tabloid News Station’

Nikki Haley, who was sworn in as Governor of South Carolina in January, has  attacked Columbia’s WACH after the Fox-affiliate ran a story about a forthcoming book from Will Folks, a political consultant and former gubernatorial spokesman who claimed last spring to have had an “inappropriate physical relationship” with Haley.

“WACH FOX 57 is a tabloid news station and has no concept of journalism,” Haley wrote on her Facebook page, after WACH reported that Folks was daring Haley to sue him for libel in connection with his account of their relationship.

Haley’s political campaign was forced into damage control mode last May when Folks claimed to have had a relationship with Haley “several years ago.”  At the time, Haley stated that she has “been 100 percent faithful” to her husband and that Folks’s claim was “totally false.”

WACH reported in its post, attributed to news director Bryan Cox, that “Folks has seized on the fact that Haley has not filed a lawsuit against him for libel or defamation as evidence to support his allegations.” WACH also linked to a 281-word excerpt from Folks’s forthcoming book in which he writes, “It was apparent to both Nikki and I that the sexual chemistry between the two of us was very strong.” Read more
