Cox Media Group Selling, Adding Stations

In an effort to focus on larger markets, Cox Media Group has announced that it is selling four of the stations it currently owns and buying four stations from Newport Television.

The stations being sold are KFOX in El Paso, WJAC in Johnstown, PA, KRXI in Reno and WTOV in Stubenville, OH.

The stations Cox is buying from Newport Television are WAWS and WTEV in Jacksonville and KOKI and KMYT in Tulsa.

“This simplified structure will enable CMG to capitalize on continued growth and synergies, while retaining its size financially,” president Doug Franklin said in a statement. continued…

Car Sinks in Floodwaters on Live TV During WTEV-WAWS Severe Weather Coverage

A car sank in a flooded creek behind WTEV-WAWS during the stations’ severe weather coverage, making for a tense moment of live TV (video above).

It turned out that a teenager, along with a friend, was driving the car and, confused by the rising waters, took a wrong turn into a creek. Both young men escaped to safety, but the car was ruined.

Following the incident, the joint Jacksonville stations orchestrated some more live TV drama when a local car dealership surprised the kid with a new car. Video inside… continued…

Jacksonville Newsers Hosting ‘Anchorman’-Inspired Street Fight

Like so many of your fellow local newsers, if you love the cult classic “Anchorman,” then you may want to head to Jacksonville, Florida this weekend.

In the spirit of the film, numerous Jax TV, print, and radio newsrooms–including folks from WJXT, WTEV-WAWS, and First Coast News–are fielding teams to face off in tomorrow’s News Room Street Fight. Journos will participate in a charity dodge ball tournament to benefit the Jacksonville Police Athletic League, with special appearances by Jacksonville Jaguars players Eben Britton and Rashad Jennings , and Ron Burgundy himself (sorry, no Will Ferrell – it’ll be a local actor dressed up).

Street Fight co-organizer Melissa Ross, a WJCT-FM anchor and former WOFL anchor, says that “since no one can forget the trident in the ‘Anchorman’ fight scene, an authentic golden trident trophy will be awarded to the winning news team!” continued…

Jacksonville Reporter Nearly Attacked by Giant Reptile

“Kate, are you actually in there with them?” a concerned Tera Barz asked Kate Paul, who was reporting live from inside a reptile enclosure, during the WAWS morning newscast.

A rare breed of crocodile-like reptile had just laid eggs at a local zoo and Paul was there to cover it. She quickly found out, though, that one should keep their distance from a Gharial mother who has just laid eggs (video above).

“You’re a brave woman, Kate,” said anchor Mike Barz after the reptile lunged at Paul. “You’ve earned your money today, that’s for sure.” [h/t Florida News Center]
