Zurawik: Highs and Lows for Baltimore Stations During Ravens Victory Parade

Baltimore Sun TV critic David Zurawik reflects on local stations’ coverage of the Baltimore Ravens’ Super Bowl victory parade. Zurawik saw the good — CBS O&O WJZ and NBC affiliate WBAL “dominated coverage,” he writes — and the bad:

But it made my blood boil to see reporters using fans as props. Telling fans to give a cheer or start singing and whooping when the cameras are pointed at them is both stupid and insensitive, and there was plenty of it.

And having your reporters wear purple scarves or stand on corners and act like crowd cheerleaders, which is what I saw too much of from WMAR during the parade, isn’t enough. Really.

The other thing that annoyed me, and it has been building for weeks, involves veteran reporters acting like they are buddies with the players, referring to Terrell Suggs, for example, as T-Sizzle and calling out to him on the parade route.

Zurawik noted WJZ’s Adam May and WBAL’s Deborah Weiner particularly stood out, writing, “There are reporters, and then there are reporters. Weiner and May were REPORTERS Tuesday.”

“This year marks an extraordinary milestone birthday for us,” Hearst CEO Frank A.
After 32 Years at WRC, Anchor Joe Krebs to Retire

Longtime WRC anchor and reporter Joe Krebs announced today that he will retire on March 30, after 32 years at the D.C. station.

“I really feel like I’ve been living my dream for almost 42 years, including the last 32 years here at Channel 4. Being a news broadcaster is what I always wanted to be,” Krebs said, announcing his retirement. “Now, I want to travel with my wife and spend more time with my kids and grandchild–soon to be grandchildren–and, quite frankly, just do whatever darn well I want to do.”

Krebs has spent the last 18 years anchoring WRC’s morning newscast, and the station has tapped Aaron Gilchrist as his a.m. successor. Gilchrist will join Eun Yang at the morning anchor desk beginning April 2. continued…

WBAL Lower-Third Leads To Unfortunate Labeling of Black Friday Video

WBAL, the NBC-affiliate in Baltimore, learned an important lesson about copy-editing lower-thirds during Black Friday coverage this weekend.

The above graphic, which was likely meant to read “Black Friday Holiday Shoppers,” was missing a very important word.

WBAL’s Gerry Sandusky Takes Twitter Hate in Stride

Ever since former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky was accused of sex crimes against young boys earlier this month, WBAL sports director Gerry Sandusky has had to constantly tell people “‘Gerry’ with a ‘G.’”

As new details in the Jerry Sandusky case continue to emerge, Gerry has had to stick with this refrain, especially on Twitter. continued…

Because of His Name, WBAL Sports Director Gerry Sandusky Treads Carefully With Penn State Story

For WBAL sports director Gerry Sandusky, the current news cycle is a challenge for an unusual reason — his name.

Sandusky, who does the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts on Baltimore’s NBC-affiliate, shares a name — although not a spelling — with Jerry Sandusky, the former assistant football coach at Penn State who is accused of 40 counts of sexual abuse over a 15-year span.

“It’s a very delicate thing because first and foremost, this is a horrific story,” Gerry Sandusky told the Baltimore Sun. “If he is guilty of doing what he is alleged of having done, there are real victims that my heart goes out to.” continued…
