George Spencer is joining NBC-owned WCAU in Philadelphia as a general assignment reporter next month.

Spencer moves to Philadelphia from Orlando, where he has been an anchor and reporter at ABC affiliate WFTV since 2008. Prior to that, he held the same role at News 12 The Bronx in New York City.

“George is a dynamic journalist,” WCAU vice president of news Anzio Williams said in a statement. “His style of reporting works well with our mission of delivering viewers the very best news and information available.”

Matt DeLucia Joins WCAU From KVUU

Matt DeLucia is joining WCAU, the NBC-owned station in Philadelphia, next month.

DeLucia comes to Philly from Las Vegas, where he has been a reporter and fill-in anchor at KVVU since 2009. While he was there, he won three Pacific Southwest Emmy awards for journalistic enterprise, team coverage and news writing.

“Matt is an enterprising, hard-working journalist,” WCAU vice president of news Anzio Williams said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to welcome him back to the area as part of the NBC10 family.”

NBC Universal Buys WWSI in Philadelphia

NBC Universal is acquiring WWSI, the Telemundo affiliate in Philadelphia, from ZGS Communications, according to Broadcasting & Cable.

NBC will buy the station for $19 million and form a duopoly with WCAU, the NBC-owned station in Philadelphia. NBC also owns the Telemundo Network.

“We are looking forward to building off the success of our Philadelphia Telemundo affiliate and helping expand the reach of Telemundo,” the company said in a statement, according to B&C. “This acquisition highlights our commitment to the Spanish-language community and will help bolster our ongoing efforts to serve our Hispanic communities, businesses and audiences.”

In Philadelphia, Different Approaches to Chopper Coverage

The Philadelphia Daily News takes a look at the different approaches to aerial coverage for the market’s local stations. The piece examines local news service (LNS) agreements, which allow stations to pool helicopter resources. In Philly, NBC O&O WCAU used to share a helicopter with Fox O&O WTXF, an agreement that expired last year:

“We believe we should look to differentiate ourselves from other television stations in the market,” [WCAU vice president of news Anzio] Williams said. “It was hard to differentiate ourselves when we were using the same pictures.”

He added, “We wanted to make sure that everything we do is better. And by getting SKYFORCE 10, we now have the opportunity to have closer images, and we can take viewers where we want to. We wanted to have the best possible tool we could put in the air.”

Former Orlando Anchor Jacqueline London Lands at WCAU

Former Orlando anchor Jacqueline London is joining WCAU, the NBC-owned station in Philadelphia.

London spent 10 years at Orlando CBS affiliate WKMG before her departure in 2010. She will begin later this month as an anchor and reporter at WCAU.

“Jacqueline is a skilled journalist and an engaging anchor, and we look forward to welcoming her to the NBC10 team,” WCAU vice president of news Anzio Williams said in announcing the hire.

Anchor Aditi Roy Leaving Philly’s WCAU

WCAU weekend morning anchor Aditi Roy is leaving Philadelphia for the West Coast, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

It will be a return to West Coast for Roy, who spent several months in 2011 filling in as a correspondent for the NBC News Los Angeles bureau. She reportedly has a new job lined up, but no word yet where.

Roy joined the NBC O&O in 2002. PhillyChitChat cites her recent engagement as the reason behind her departure.

Anchor Dawn Timmeney Out at Philadelphia’s WCAU

Anchor Dawn Timmeney has left WCAU in Philadelphia, a spokesperson for the NBC O&O confirmed to TVSpy.

WCAU news director Anzio Williams announced the news to staffers in an memo obtained by The 24/7 Newsroom.

“In her 12 years at NBC10 Dawn Timmeney has worn many hats in different dayparts,” Williams wrote after Timmeney’s last newscast Friday. “Please join me in wishing Dawn the very best as she moves forward.”

Timmeney joined WCAU in 2001 as an anchor and reporter. She most recently anchored the 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. newscasts, as well as working as a health and general assignment reporter.

Nefertiti Jáquez to Join WCAU From KPRC

After almost three years at KPRC in Houston, Nefertiti Jáquez is leaving for WCAU in Philadelphia, Houston media blogger Mike McGuff reports.

It’s a return to Philly for Jáquez, who spent three years as a reporter at WTXF before joining KPRC in 2010. Her last day in Houston will be December 31.

“I have recently decided to pursue my career goals closer to home, and my family,” Jáquez told McGuff. “I will be leaving at the end of the year. I am truly leaving here with mixed feelings; happy about the next step in my life, but sad to be leaving such a great city and community.”

Meteorologist Brittney Shipp Joins WCAU

Meteorologist Brittney Shipp will join WCAU, the NBC O&O in Philadelphia, early next year.

Shipp moves to Philadelphia from Phoenix, where she has been a weekend meteorologist and special assignment reporter at KTVK for five years. She began her career at KYMA, the NBC affiliate in Yuma, Ariz.

“Providing our viewers with the best possible weather information is always one of our main goals. Brittney’s exceptional skills, along with her warmth and enthusiasm, will be a great addition to our team,” WCAU vice president of news Anzio Williams said in a statement.

Evening Anchor Tim Lake Out at WCAU in Philly

After 20 years at WCAU, Tim Lake anchored his final broadcast Friday. The Phildelphia NBC O&O did not renew his contract, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

News director Anzio Williams sent an email to WCAU staffers shortly before midnight Friday night thanking Lake for “his many years of service as a reporter and anchor at NBC10.”

“Today was Tim’s last day,” the email, which was obtained by the Inquirer, reads. “We wish him well in the future. A search for a new anchor is underway.”

Lake’s departure was not acknowledged on the broadcast. He had anchored the stations 6 and 11 p.m. newscast with Renee Chenault-Fattah since 2001.

Daralene Jones Will Join WCAU From WFTV

Daralene Jones is joining WCAU, the NBC O&O in Philadelphia, in January.

>WPVI, Philadelphia’s ABC O&O will air “Helping Our Neighbors: Surviving Sandy”, a live telethon from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. for those who would like to donate to the American Red Cross disaster relief fund.

East Coast Stations Deliver Extended Hurricane Coverage as Sandy Marches On

Stations in major markets across the East Coast chose to preempt, or partially preempt, network morning shows Monday to remain in extended local coverage of Hurricane Sandy.

In New York City, where the subways and buses have been shut down since Sunday night, the local stations all began live storm coverage at 4amET. NBC O&O WNBC went to “Today” at 7 a.m. and returned to local programming at 7:30 a.m. WCBS aired only the first hour of “CBS This Morning,” and WABC aired “Good Morning America” in its entirety.

Chris Cato Named Weekend Anchor at WCAU

Chris Cato has been hired as the weekend evening anchor at WCAU, the NBC O&O in Philadelphia.

Cato comes to Philly from Greenville, S.C., where he is the evening anchor at CBS affiliate WSPA. He was named 2012 Reporter of the Year by the South Carolina Broadcasters Association. At WCAU, he will co-anchor the weekend 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts alongsinde Denise Nakano.

In announcing the hire, WCAU vice president of news Anzio Williams called Cato an “engaging and versatile talent.”

“His skills will complement our mission of delivering the best news and information to viewers every day,” Williams said.

Vince DeMentri Lands at WICS: ‘I don’t think you can judge anybody’s character by an incident or two’

Local news veteran Vince DeMentri, who has a long history of controversy at his previous jobs, has landed at WICS in Springfield, Ill., the State Journal Register reports.

DeMentri’s last job was at WPIX, the CW affiliate in New York City, where he was a reporter until 2010. Prior to that, he worked at WCAU, the NBC O&O in Philadelphia. At both stations, he was involved in incidents that catapulted him into the spotlight.

In 2008, DeMentri was fired from WCAU after having an affair with co-anchor Lori Delgado. DeMentri, who was accused of vandalizing Delgado’s car, sued both her and the station, saying it was unfair that he was fired and Delgado got to keep her job. Delgado resigned from the station the day the lawsuit was filed; DeMentri dropped the lawsuit in 2010. continued…
