The E.W. Scripps Company has named

“WCPO has a long history of agenda-setting journalism that serves the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky community,” said Brian Lawlor, senior vice president of the Scripps television division in a statement. “As a seasoned media executive who values creative storytelling and impactful journalism, Jeff will now have the opportunity to work in his hometown to help define the role of a local media organization in this new digital era.”

Before coming to WCPO, Brogan was in a corporate role at Scripps, overseeing news strategy at several of its owned stations.  He began his career at WXIX in Cincinnati and began working for Scripps in 2000 when he got a job as a producer at WCPO. In 2004, he was promoted to executive producer. He was named assistant news director in 2008. Two years later, he was promoted to news director of Scripps NBC affiliate WPTV in West Palm Beach, FL.

The judges cited its coverage of the marriage equality debate, calling KARE’s reporting “fair, balanced and deeply personal.” WBNS in Columbus received a special commendation for citizen engagement. Denver’s KUSA was the winner of the Cronkite/Jackson Prize for Fact Checking Political Messages, a category that was just introduced to the awards this year.

Thaxton announced to the staff that he starts Monday as a temporary GM at Cleveland’s WEWS-TV, a sister Scripps station, as he begins a transition to teaching and consulting. He  came here March 21, 2011, to replace Bill Fee, who retired in December 2010.

According to the article, Thaxton agreed to Scripps’ request that he, “remain with the company and serve as the interim General Manager at WEWS in Cleveland on a temporary basis as Sam Rosenwasser remains out on a medical leave of absence.” continued…

“I would like to thank Bill for his many years of service and dedication. Bill will only be on the job until December 9th but he will always be part of the 9 On Your Side family,” news director Lane Michaelsen said in a statement to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

The Enquirer also reports WCPO has hired Larry Smith as a multimedia journalist and weekend co-anchor. Smith joins the station from Turner Sports, where he was a freelance anchor. He will co-anchor the weekend evening newscasts with Julie O’Neill.

Four meteorologists from ABC affiliates around the country will go head to head on the game show “Let’s Ask America” in order to benefit the American Red Cross.

(Pictured from left to right) Denis Phillips, chief meteorologist for Tampa Bay’s WFTS, Lisa Hidalgo, morning news meteorologist for Denver’s KMGH, Ashley Brown, meteorologist for Indianapolis’ WRTV, and Steve Raleigh, chief meteorologist for Cincinnati’s WCPO, won’t have to travel far to appear on the show which allows viewers to call in from anywhere via Skype.

The following description from the show’s websitetells what the forecasters can expect,

The game is simple: “Let’s Ask America” polls America about fun and irreverent topics to find out what people are thinking (e.g. Which of these shows did a group of prison inmates say they would choose to watch in their cell for an entire year? a) “Dr. Phil,” b) “Days of Our Lives,” c) “The View”). Then, all the contestants have to do is correctly predict the answer. The prize money increases with each question. There are three rounds and at the end of each round, the contestant with the lowest cash total is eliminated from the game.

Gray, the station’s evening anchor, shared the news with viewers during Tuesday’s 5 p.m. newscast. “I have the support of the world’s best wife and children, my friends here at work, and those of you who are friends at large,” he said. “And with all of you in my corner, I am confident 100 percent and strong.”

Mario Ramirez

Ramirez joined WGXA, where he is the 5:30 and 10 p.m. anchor, in 2010. He begins as a general assignment reporter at WCPO on August 27.

“I’m excited to live in Ohio for the first time and experience a vibrant city with 2 major sports teams and while working for a great station,” Ramirez told TVSpy via email. “I’ll definitely miss the southern charm of Macon, Ga. and all the opportunities that I had starting out in such a welcoming market. Bob Morford

Morford joins the station from WCPO, the ABC-affiliate in Cincinnati, where he has been the news director for 11 years. Prior to that, he held the news director position at KNXV in Phoenix, WPXI in Pittsburgh and WLWT in Cincinnati.

“Bob is an accomplished news manager with more than 30 years of experience. His track record of excellence speaks for itself,” Tom Doerr, KRIV’s vice president and news director, said in a statement. “Bob will be a tremendous asset to our station and leader in the newsroom.”

“One month ago today…I found out that I have breast cancer,” Nero told viewers at the end of the Cincinnati ABC-affiliate’s morning newscast, as she fought back tears. “Now, I’m 38–young by breast cancer standards–and I have no family history, so this was the furthest thing from our minds. After the initial shock, it was time to fight it.”

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports Noll will join the public relations department at a local non-profit. She has been WCPO’s Northern Kentucky reporter, as well as a web producer and reporter for the station’s website, since 2011.

Prior to joining WCPO, Noll worked at several newspapers, including KYPost.com, the Centerville-Bellbrook Times and the Kettering-Oakwood Times.
