Norman Robinson Signs Off From WDSU’s 10 p.m. Newscast

In a “preliminary step” toward retirement, Norman Robinson will anchor his last 10 p.m. newscast on WDSU tonight, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Robinson plans to retire in June 2014 after 23 years at the anchor desk. He will continue as the New Orleans NBC affiliate’s 6 p.m. anchor until then.

“I decided to scale back and give myself a year to make the transition,” Robinson told the Times-Picayune. “I’m in great health. It was not a health-related decision … I’m happy with where I am. I’m excited about this. This is just a preliminary step.”

KENS Executive News Director Kurt Davis Joins CBS News

KENS executive news director Kurt Davis is joining CBS News as vice president of news services.

Davis has worked at the San Antonio CBS affiliate for 10 years. In his new role, he will oversee CBS News’ satellite newsgathering organization, which provides news and information to the network’s 200 affiliates.

Davis has also worked as manager of coverage and content at WSB in Atlanta and as news director at WDSU in New Orleans. He has also worked at KDFW in Dallas, WSET in Lynchburg, Va., KATV in Little Rock and WBRZ in Baton Rouge, La.

Former KRIV Producer Murdered in Houston

Kathryn Greer Feagin, a former producer at KRIV, was found dead in her West Houston apartment Wednesday, Houston media blogger Mike McGuff reports. She was 35.

Houston police are investigating the death as a murder, according to Houston ABC O&O KTRK. There was no sign of forced entry at her apartment, where her grandmother found her Wednesday after she had not heard from Feagin for several days.

Feagain worked at WDSU in New Orleans before joining KRIV in 2009. After leaving the Fox O&O in 2011, she taught occasional classes at Sculpt Fitness in Houston. “She had a real bubbly personality, just always happy,” a colleague told KTRK.

Former New Orleans News Director Alec Gifford Dies at 85

Alec Gifford, a former news director at both WVUE and WDSU in New Orleans, died last week. He was 85.

Gifford joined WDSU, the New Orleans NBC affiliate, in 1955 after serving in the U.S. Navy. In 1966, he joined NBC News in New York, where he worked for one year before returning to New Orleans as news director, anchor and reporter at Fox affiliate WVUE. He returned to WDSU in 1980 and continued there until he retired in 2006.

“If today we enjoy a measure of respect and have earned the trust of our viewers, it is in large part due to the extraordinary work Alec Gifford did to establish WDSU as a news organization,” WDSU president and general manager Joel Vilmenay said in a statement. “We continue to honor Alec’s work every day in our effort to report stories with the same sense of dedication, integrity, talent and passion as Alec did.”

‘Please Stop!’: Mo Farah Tweets Support of WDSU Anchor

Mo Farah, the UK two-time Olympic champion who was asked on-air if he had ever run before, took to Twitter to defend the anchor who asked him the question.

Farah tweeted, “Just wanna say to everyone being nasty to LaTonya Norton please stop!! She made a mistake like we all do!! She didn’t mean anything by it!

For those who missed it, LaTonya Norton, anchor for New Orleans NBC affiliate WDSU, asked Farah in a live interview “Haven’t you run before? This isn’t your first time?” giving viewers the impression she had not done her homework before interviewing the winner of the “Rock ‘n’ Roll New Orleans” half marathon, not to mention the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter races.

WDSU Anchor to Olympic Gold Medalist Mo Farah: ‘Haven’t You Run Before?’

After winning a half-marathon in New Orleans this weekend, Mo Farah was the subject of an awkward interview on NBC affiliate WDSU (video above).

LaTonya Norton, who was apparently unaware that Farah won two gold medals in the 2012 Olympics, asked Farah: “Haven’t you run before? This isn’t your first time?”

The video has since been removed from the WDSU website.

Meteorologist Kweilyn Murphy Joins WDSU

Kweilyn Murphy is joining WDSU. Murphy will be the weekend meteorologist at the New Orleans NBC affiliate.

Murphy moves to New Orleans from Greenville, N.C., where she is the weekend meteorologist at WNCT. Prior to that, Murphy was a freelance meteorologist at KDKA in Pittsburgh. She has also worked at WQED multimedia.

Murphy begins at WDSU next month.

Andy Cunningham Joins WDSU From WKYT

Andy Cunningham is joining WDSU, the NBC affiliate in New Orleans.

Cunningham moves to Louisiana from Kentucky, where he has been a general assignment reporter at WKYT in Lexington since March. This is Cunningham’s second stint at the station. He previously worked there from 2007-09.

Cunningham has also been a reporter at KABB in San Antonio, KFXA in Cedar Rapids and KLJB in Davenport, Iowa.

Greg Shepperd to Lead KHBS-KHOG in Fort Smith

Greg Shepperd has been named news director at KHBS-KHOG, Hearst Television’s duopoly in Fort Smith-Fayetteville.

Shepperd has worked for Hearst for the past seven years. Most recently, he was the managing editor for KCRA, the NBC-affiliate in Sacramento. He is also a former assistant news director for WDSU, the NBC-affiliate in New Orleans.

Philadelphia NBC Station Names New News Director

Anzio Williams left KCRA in Sacramento last month after five years as the station’s news director to pursue “bigger and better things.” And he got just that as NBC O&O WCAU in Philadelphia today introduced him as its new vice president of news.

“I’m so proud to be part of the hardest working news team in Philadelphia,” Williams said in a statement. “This is a great news town, and I cannot wait be a part of this community.”

Melanie Hebert Makes Her WWL Debut

Melanie Hebert made her debut anchoring WWL‘s early-morning newscast today, ten months after the announcement of her hire at the New Orleans CBS-affiliate.

Hebert was sitting out a non-compete clause in her contract with NBC-affiliate WDSU, where she worked until last September. She has worked at WWL for the past several months as an off-camera reporter and digital media correspondent.

“Because I knew I had a job waiting for me I was able to enjoy my time off, then I enjoyed different roles of working in news over the past six months,” she told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “But I am definitely ready to go back on-air now.” continued…

News Director Anzio Williams Leaving KCRA

Anzio Williams, who has been the news director at Sacramento’s KCRA since 2007, is set to leave the Hearst-owned station next Monday.

KCRA general manager Elliott Troshinsky announced Williams’s departure in an email to staff this week, saying that the veteran news director “has expressed a desire to pursue some other career interests and opportunities.”

Williams, who has been with Hearst for 14 years, joined KCRA after two years as news director at WDSU in New Orleans. Before that, he was the assistant ND at WESH in Orlando and at WCNC in Charlotte. continued…

WDSU’s Scott Walker Will Be Anchoring the News, Not Facing a Recall Election, Tomorrow

Wisconsin governor Scott Walker (left) is currently fighting for his political life ahead of tomorrow’s recall election. This presents a fairly hilarious problem for another Scott Walker (right) who anchors the evening newscasts at New Orleans NBC-affiliate WDSU.

WDSU’s Walker has been flooded with messages from Facebook and Twitter users who have mistaken him for the controversial governor. The good-natured anchor, who has been confused with the governor before, recently posted “An Open Letter to the People of Wisconsin” on his personal blog about the mix-up:

There are people though who are a bit confused, like the person who tweeted his family’s support to me this morning. There are many others like him. Reach out to them. Reveal the truth. Let them know that I have much better hair than your Scott Walker…and I’ll be in New Orleans anchoring the news on June 5.
