Denise Eck Named News Director at WDTN

Dayton NBC affiliate WDTN has announced the hiring of Denise Eck as news director.

“We’re excited to have Denise join the WDTN-TV and Dayton’s CW family,” said Joe Abouzeid, president and general manager of WDTN and CW affiliate WBDT. “Her years of experience as well as her ability to lead a multiplatform newsroom have us excited for what’s ahead for the 2 NEWS team.”

Eck, who will start at WDTN in two weeks, comes to Dayton from nearby Cincinnati where she was assistant news director for WCPO. Before working at WCPO, Eck was the news director at KTKA in Topeka, KS.

WDTN, the NBC-affiliate in Dayton, is launching high-definition newscasts this weekend.

WDTN General Manager to Join Rival WKEF-WRGT

Lisa Barhorst, vice president and general manager of Dayton NBC-affiliate WDTN, has left the station to join a crosstown rival.

Barhorst has been hired at WKEF-WRGT, the ABC-affiliate and Fox-affiliate in Dayton, according to the Dayton Business Journal. She will take over for Dean Ditmer, who left in March to join KUSA in Denver as director of sales. Barhorst begins in her new role on August 6.

Barhorst has worked at WDTN for seven years. Prior to that, she was general sales manager at WWHO, the CW-affiliate in Columbus.

WDTN Hires Katie Ussin as Main Anchor

Less than a month after WDTN parted ways with Michelle Kingsfield, its main anchor for the past five years, the Dayton NBC-affiliate has hired her replacement.

Katie Ussin, who has worked as an anchor and reporter in Billings, MT since 2006, has joined WDTN as the co-anchor of the station’s 5:00, 5:30, 6:00, 10:00, and 11:00 p.m. weekday newscasts, alongside Mark Allen.

“I am excited to be here and so impressed with the beauty of Ohio and the kindness of the people,” Ussin wrote on her new WDTN Facebook page this week. “I’m used to good folk, growing up in Montana, so please expect the same thing right back!” continued…

WDTN Cuts Main Anchor Michelle Kingsfield

Dayton NBC-affiliate WDTN has parted ways with Michelle Kingsfield, who anchored the station’s 5, 5:30, and 11 p.m. weekday newscasts over the past five years.

Kingsfield told the Dayton Daily News that she was “abruptly” let go last week, with the LIN-owned station failing to offer a reason for her dismissal.

Kingsfield has been a fixture on Dayton TV for over a decade. Before joining WDTN in 2007, she worked as an anchor at WKEF-WRGT, the market’s Sinclair-run duopoly. continued…

For its regular “Crime Stoppers” reports, WDTN usually uses a mix of interviews, surveillance video, and crime scene footage to illustrate local unsolved crimes. But as police search for a flasher who has been striking throughout the Dayton area, the NBC-affiliate went ahead and used reenactment (video above).

Hearst Television Senior VP Philip Stolz to Retire

Philip Stolz, who has been senior vice president of Hearst Television since 1998, will retire next year, the company announced today.

The retirement caps more than 40 years in the television industry. Stolz began his career as an account executive and sales manager at WXOW in La Crosse, WI, and eventually went on to serve as general manager for WBAL in Baltimore, WDTN in Dayton, WQOW in Eau Claire, WI, and KCRG in Cedar Rapids, IA.

“Phil’s insightful understanding of television news, programming, sales and community engagement, coupled with his sound business judgment, has contributed enormously to the success and positive reputation of our company,” Hearst president and CEO David Barrett said in a statement. continued…

In Dayton, WDTN Will Launch 4:30 a.m. Newscast

WDTN, the NBC-affiliate in Dayton, will launch an expanded newscast with a 4:30 a.m. start time on Monday.

“The weather is changing and there’s no better time to give our viewers an even-earlier look at how they should plan their day,” WDTN general manager Lisa Barhorst said in a statement. “We all live busy lives and people are starting their days even earlier.”

WDTN will keep the same anchor team — Dan Edwards and Pam Elliot, with meteorologist Jamie Jarosik — in place for the extra half-hour.

The station will be the third in the market, after CBS-affiliate WHIO and ABC-affiliate WKEF, to start the morning newscast at 4:30 a.m.

NBC Stations Across Ohio Teaming Up for Debate

NBC-affiliates across Ohio are partnering to present a statewide debate centered on Issue 2, a controversial state referendum up for repeal. The debate will be moderated by NBC News political director Chuck Todd and broadcast from Columbus on Tuesday, October 25th.

The debate will be carried by WLWT Cincinnati, WKYC Cleveland, WCMH Columbus, WDTN Dayton, WLIO Lima, WNWO Toledo, WTOV Wheeling-Steubenville, WFMJ Youngstown, and WHIZ Zanesville. It will also be streamed live on each of the stations’ websites. continued…

Ohio Stations Yank Ad Featuring Grandmother

Thirty TV stations across Ohio have reportedly pulled a political ad off the air over its controversial use of footage featuring a great-grandmother from Cincinnati.

78-year-old Marlene Quinn recently signed on to appear in an ad opposing an upcoming ballot initiative. The ad (embedded above)–in which Quinn recounts how a group of brave firefighters saved her granddaughter’s life–was apparently so effective at swaying voter opinion that a group supporting the ballot initiative used footage of Quinn in its own ad (video inside). continued…
