Longtime WJHL GM Moves to Rival WCYB

Jack Dempsey, who has spent the last 23 years as president and general manager of CBS-affiliate WJHL, is moving to Tri-Cities rival WCYB, and WEMT.

Bonten Media Group, which owns the NBC-affiliate in the Tri-Cities area of northeastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia, and oversees operations at WCYB, the market’s Fox-affiliate, announced today that Dempsey has been named vice president and general manager of WCYB and WEMT.

“We are fortunate to be able to attract so talented a manager as Jack Dempsey,” said Bonten CEO Randy Bongarten, announcing the hiring.  “His deep knowledge of and success in both television, in general, and the Tri-Cities market, in particular, will be a great asset to our company.” Read more

Bristol’s WCYB Adds Julie Newman, Brian Bishop

WCYB-WEMT in Bristol, TN has hired anchor Julie Newman (pictured) and reporter Brian Bishop.

Newman will co-anchor the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts with Garick Zikan beginning April 4. She comes to Bristol from Blue Ridge PBS, where she has been a producer and host for three years. Bishop, who will be a general assignment reporter, joins WCYB from WKPT in Kingsport, TN.

The station has also shuffled two meteorologists: weekend meteorologist Donnie Cox has been promoted to weekday mornings, and WEMT weekend meteorologist David Boyd has been moved to WCYB’s weekend newscasts.
