A New Meteorologist and a Retirement at Boston’s WCVB

WCVB is adding a meteorologist and losing a veteran reporter to retirement, the Boston ABC affiliate announced Thursday.

Amalia Barreda (left) who has worked for the station for 21 years, will retire at the end of June.

“These 21 years have been a great ride, covering unforgettable stories with thoughtful, hard-working and talented people,” Barreda said in a statement. “This was a huge and hard decision to make, and it is bittersweet to leave so many of you who I consider family to spend more time with family.”

Barreda’s announcement comes on the same day that Danielle Vollmar (right) begins as the station’s weekend morning meteorologist.

“Danielle is a talented and passionate meteorologist, a strong compliment to StormTeam 5,” WCVB president and general manager Bill Fine said in a statement.

Vollmar comes from KDAF, the CW affiliate in Dallas. She has also worked at KOKH in Oklahoma City, WBOC in Salisbury, Md., and WENY in Elmira, N.Y.

WTVG Adds Two Meteorologists and a Reporter

Toledo ABC affiliate WTVG has made three new hires, according to the Toledo Blade: Ross Ellet (left), Nichole Langley (center) and Daryl Kirkland-Morgan (right).

Ellet is a meteorologist who joined WTVG from the Ohio News Network, which shuttered earlier this year. Before that, he was a weekend meteorologist for KHBS-KHOG, Hearst Television’s duopoly in Fayetteville, Ark.

Langley, also a meteorologist, will serve as WTVG’s weekday traffic anchor and reporter and will also be an occasional weather anchor. She comes from KFBB in Great Falls, Mont., where she has been the morning meteorologist since 2010. Read more

WTVG News Director Tapped to Oversee SJL Broadcasting’s News Operations

SJL Broadcasting announced today that WTVG news director Brian Trauring has been tapped to oversee news operations for all of the company’s stations.

Trauring will continue serving as WTVG’s news director as he takes on the additional title of executive news director for SJL Broadcasting.

In the newly created position, Trauring will, according to the announcement, “oversee strategic planning and work with news directors and staffs at the local level.”

Trauring, who has been WTVG’s news director for the past ten years, will be working with WJRT in Flint, MI; WICU-WSEE in Erie, PA; and WENY in Elmira, NY.

Ex-ABC O&Os Get New GMs in Ownership Change

The two former ABC O&Os recently sold to SJL Broadcasting now have new station heads. The general managers of both WJRT in Flint and WTVG in Toledo have decided to leave their posts and SJL has appointed replacements.

WJRT’s Tom Bryson and WTVG’s David Zamichow have opted to leave on their own, according to Broadcasting & Cable, as SJL prepares to take over ownership of the stations this week.

“Both of them are class people,” SJL president George Lilly told B&C. “We would’ve kept both in a heartbeat.”

Bryson and Zamichow are being replaced by two TV veterans that have worked for the Lilly family.  Peter Veto has been named GM of WJRT while John Christianson has been handed the reins of WTVG. Read more
