WEYI Pushes News Back to Let Viewers Watch ‘Voice’ Finale After Power Outage

Viewers of WEYI were not happy after the station took a power hit that knocked the Flint, MI, NBC affiliate off the air during the finale of the NBC show “The Voice.”

Viewers screens froze around 10:25 p.m. last night during the build up to the announcement of the winner. Many viewers took to the station’s facebook page to air their displeasure with the situation. One viewer commented, “Someone’s getting fired. #VoiceFinale”

The station came back at 11:05 p.m. with anchor Jane Park telling viewers, “We want to apologize for some technical issues we’ve been dealing with here. We’ve had a power hit at the station. At this time, we’re going to take you to the last segment of “The Voice” finale. We’ll be back after that with your local news.” continued…

Kathy Reynolds Joins WGME as News Director

Kathy Reynolds is joining WGME, the CBS affiliate in Portland, Maine, as news director. Reynolds comes from WEYI in Flint, where she has been the news director since June 2011.

“I’m pretty excited both personally and professionally speaking,” Reynolds told TVSpy. “My husband is the chief photographer at WPTZ in Burlington, Vermont. So this will put me closer to him and the many friends we have in Portland.”

“I have a great team here at WEYI and will miss them dearly,” Reynolds continued. “The goodbyes are hard but the my last day here is March 6.”

Reynolds begins at WGME on March 13.

Reporter Brittany Noble Joins KMOV From WEYI

Brittany Noble is returning home to St. Louis as she joins CBS affiliate KMOV as a reporter.

Since September 2011, Noble has reported for the morning newscast at WEYI, the NBC affiliate in Saginaw, Mich. Her first day at KMOV will be January 7.

Noble has also worked at WBBJ in Jackson, Tenn., as a reporter and anchor. She began her career working as a producer at KAIT in Jonesboro, Ark. while she pursued a master’s degree in journalism at Arkansas State University.

Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa Out at WEYI

Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa has parted ways with WEYI, the NBC affiliate in Flint.

Torregrossa, who has been WEYI’s chief meteorologist since 2003, confirmed to mlive.com that he is no longer at the station. WEYI declined to comment on the matter.

“We do not make comments on personnel changes, these changes and decisions are between the employee and the company,” the station’s statement reads. ”We are very pleased with our weather staff and product and we look forward to continuing to provide the most accurate weather to our viewers.” continued…

WEYI Hires Assistant News Director

WEYI has hired Neille Giffune as assistant news director.

In April, WEYI’s owner, Barrington Broadcasting, tapped news director Kathy Reynolds to oversee sister station WNWO in Toledo, in addition to leading the news department at the Flint NBC-affiliate. Giffune will assist Reynolds as she splits time between both stations.

“Neille Giffune is a competitor,” said Becky Butcher, president and CEO of WEYI and WBSF, announcing the hiring. “She understands effective leadership and isn’t afraid to roll up her sleeves and pitch in to get the job done.” continued…

WEYI News Director Kathy Reynolds Tapped to Oversee Toledo Sister Station WNWO

Kathy Reynolds, who last June was named news director at WEYI in Flint, has been tapped to oversee the news department at Barrington Broadcasting sister station WNWO in Toledo.

In her new role as regional news director, Reynolds will split time between Michigan and Ohio.

“Kathy has proven that she has a strong sense of how a newscast should look, and feel,” Barrington president and CEO Becky Butcher said today in an email announcing the move.

WEYI is now searching for an assistant news director to help Reynolds when she is in Toledo. continued…

Longtime WJRT Anchor Bill Harris Joins Rival WEYI

Longtime WJRT anchor Bill Harris is joining crosstown rival WEYI.

“Grab your remotes!” NBC-affiliate WEYI exclaimed, announcing the move. “The face of Mid-Michigan news hasn’t changed, but the channel has.”

Harris spent over three decades anchoring the news for WJRT before being cut loose last spring. He returned to the station to do occasional special reports last year, but officially said goodbye in December.

Harris will anchor WEYI’s 6 p.m. newscast. His first day is set for January 30th. continued…

Bill Harris Leaves Michigan’s WJRT, For Good

Bill Harris, who returned to WJRT for “special projects” in May just one month after being let go by the new management team, says he is officially done with the Flint ABC-affiliate.

“My vision for what I want to do … didn’t mesh with [the work at] ABC12,” Harris told the Flint Journal. “It is hurting me deeply [but] the marriage wasn’t perfect. I really appreciated coming back.”

Harris says he is in talks with two rival WJRT rival stations: CBS-affiliate WNEM and NBC-affiliate WEYI. Though nothing official has been announced, the veteran anchor says he is interested in joining to anchor and work on special projects, perhaps as soon as January.

WEYI’s Lost and Found Dog Story Will Make You Cry

WEYI‘s story of a lost pooch returned to its family is becoming a hit online for its good old-fashioned tug at the heartstrings.

WEYI reporter Jenny Suniga has the story (video above): a family in Clio, MI lost its maltese dog over a year ago following a car crash that killed two family members. Now the dog is being returned to the family and they’re taking it as a sign from heaven.

So far, the video has been posted on The Washington Post‘s blogpost and The Daily What.

WEYI Appoints ‘Untraditional’ News Director

Kathy Reynolds is set to become news director at WEYI. The Mid-Michigan NBC-affiliate announced this week that Reynolds, who has spent the last year working as assistant news director at WAOW in Wausau, WI, would replace Jeff Reinarz in the role later this month.

Reinarz has served as WEYI’s news director since 2008 in addition to overseeing the station’s creative team. With the addition of Reynolds, Reinarz is moving into the position of media operations manager and will lead a planned overhaul of the station’s website and brand identity.

“When I first spoke to Reynolds, I knew she was different than most news directors,” said Becky Butcher, President and CEO of WEYI-WBSF. “I was looking for someone untraditional and Reynolds definitely fit the part. She is a very motivated individual and has a vision on where we are taking our news and website over the course of the next three years.”

Reynolds has held several different newsroom positions throughout her career. She’s been a sports reporter in Philadelphia and a weather anchor in Fargo. Before joining WAOW, she worked as an investigative reporter and special projects manager at WGGB in Springfield, MA.
