Matt Belanger Joins WTAE as Weekend Anchor

Matt Belanger is joining Pittsburgh ABC affiliate WTAE as a weekend anchor later this month.

Belanger, who begins April 24, will anchor the weekend evening newscasts alongside Shannon Perrine, meteorologist Ray Petelin and sports anchor Guy Junker.

“Matt is dedicated and very hard working and he will be a great fit for our team,” WTAE news director Justin Antoniotti said in a statement. “He understands what needs to be done to meet the high standards on WTAE Channel 4 Action News.”

Belanger comes to WTAE from WGAL in Lancaster, Pa., where he was a government and investigative reporter.

WGAL Launching Newscast on Subchannel

Starting Monday, February 4, Lancaster, PA, NBC affiliate WGAL will begin airing a 10 p.m. newscast on its subchannel 8.2.

The newscast will feature anchors Ron Martin, Janelle Stelson and meteorologist Doug Allen weekdays. The weekends will be anchored by Jim Sinkovitz and meteorologist Matthew Moore.

Lancaster Online spoke with John Baldwin from WGAL who said the 10 p.m. news will not be a duplicate of the main channel’s 11 p.m.

Baldwin didn’t say this, but the 10 p.m. newscast will compete directly with WPMT-TV Fox 43′s News at 10, which appears to be a return shot in response to other networks expanding their news coverage.

The 10 p.m. show can also be seen on Comcast channel 248, Blue Ridge cable channel 136, Kuhn Communications channel 68 and channel 460 on Verizon FiOS.

John Humphries Named General Manager at WGAL

John Humphries has been named president and general manager at WGAL, Hearst’s NBC affiliate in Lancaster, Pa.

Humphries comes from WYFF, Hearst’s NBC affiliate in Greenville, S.C., where he has been director of sales since 2006. He succeeds Paul Quinn, who announced his retirement in September.

“John brings a diverse background in news, multiplatform sales, and management to his new role at the helm of the leading TV station in the Lancaster-Harrisburg market,” Hearst Television president and CEO David J. Barrett said in a statement. “He has the experience and vision to help build upon the outstanding legacy of Paul Quinn and the WGAL team.” continued…

After 19 Years at the Helm of WGAL, General Manager Paul Quinn to Retire

Paul Quinn will retire later this year after almost two decades as president and general manager of WGAL, the Hearst-owned NBC affiliate in Lancaster, Penn.

“It has been a great run,” Quinn said in a statement. “Our staff here cares deeply about providing the best local television service possible and works tirelessly to make that happen every day. And we have had some fun in the process.”

Quinn’s retirement caps more than 40 years in local television. Prior to joining WGAL, he worked at WRAL in Raleigh-Durham and WBTV in Charlotte. In a statement announcing the retirement, Hearst Television president and CEO David Barrett praised Quinn’s “steady leadership.” continued…

James DePury Named News Director at WBRE

James DePury has been named news director at WBRE, the NBC-affiliate in Scranton-Wilkes Barre, Nexstar Broadcasting announced today.

DePury was most recently the 11 p.m. producer at WGAL, the NBC-affiliate in Lancaster, PA. Prior to that, he was news director at WPMT, the Fox-affiliate in the same market.

“He brings a creative and fresh approach to our operations, intimate knowledge of the region, the state of Pennsylvania and paramount focus to the concerns and issues our viewers face every day,” WBRE VP-GM Robert Bee said in a statement. continued…

In Harrisburg, WPMT Expands Evening News

Starting January 9, WPMT will add a 6 p.m. newscast to the programming lineup, the Harrisburg Fox-affiliate announced today.

“At Fox43 News, we are all about choice,” WPMT news director Chris Holden said in a statement. “We want to give viewers the choice to get the news when it fits their schedule.”

The station currently has a 6:30 p.m. newscast anchored by Evan Forrester and Heather Warner. The pair will also anchor the 6 p.m. newscast when it debuts next year.

The new newscast will compete in the 6 p.m. hour with NBC-affiliate WGAL, CBS-affiliate WHP and ABC-affiliate WHTM, each of which broadcasts news in that timeslot.
