LIN Media Names New GM for Buffalo’s WIVB

LIN Media has announced the naming of René LaSpina as president and general manager of its Buffalo, NY, CBS affiliate WIVB and CW affiliate WNLO.

“I am excited about joining one of the most respected and forward-thinking multimedia companies in the country that has a long history of investing in its products people and communities,” said LaSpina in a statement. “I am very fond of Buffalo, having lived in New York state for five years, and I am eager to work with the talented staff and management at WIVB-TV and WNLO-TV and achieve new levels of success.”

LaSpina takes over for Chris Musial who retired recently. She last worked as vice president and general manager for Nexstar’s Memphis and Jackson, TN, stations WPTY (now WATN), WLMT and WJKT. She has also managed stations in Albany, NY, Minneapolis, MN and Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Meteorologist Amelia Segal Joins WRC

Meteorologist Amelia Segal is joining WRC in Washington, DC. She begins at the NBC O&O on March 11.

Segal, a native of Frederick County, Md., joins WRC from WIVB-WLNO in Buffalo.

“Amelia has a true passion for weather and the background to complement our team,” said chief meteorologist Doug Kammerer said in a statement. “Adding another meteorologist – especially one from our region – will help make our coverage even better.  We are excited for Amelia to join our team.”

Along with Segal’s hire, WRC announced “significant investments” in the station’s weather resources and technology, including a more expansive network of cameras installed throughout the city and a new weather app.

LIN Media Announces Executive Promotions: New GMs in Providence, Dayton

LIN Media has announced three promotions within the company’s executive ranks. Jay Howell has been promoted to vice president of regional television, Patrick Wholey has been named president and general manager of WPRI-WNAC in Providence, and Joseph Abouzeid has been named president and general manager of WDTN-WBDT in Dayton.

Howell previously was the president and general manager of WPRI-WNAC. In his new role as vice president of regional television, he will oversee those stations as well as WWLP in Springfield, WAVY-WVBT in Norfolk, WIVB-WNLO in Buffalo, WDTN-WBDT in Dayton, KIMT in Mason City and KSNT in Topeka.

“Jay did an outstanding job as General Manager, building revenue and profit performance through the growth of audiences both on-air and online, staff development and relationships with clients and viewers in the local community,” LIN Media EVP Scott Blumenthal said in a statement. Read more
