“I don’t want to give too many details,” Paul told the News. “I’m pretty pleased. It’s for three years, with their options each year. I found out LIN isn’t doing any no-cut deals. The last deal was three no-cut years. This one doesn’t…. It had a happy ending. In a lot of ways, I’m pretty pleased.”

Paul originally joined WIVB in 1984 and left for rival WGRZ in 1988. He re-joined WIVB in 1991. He appears on the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts.

Effective April 8, [WGRZ]’s 10 p.m. newscast will switch from little-watched WNYO-TV to local Fox affiliate WUTV and it will expand from five nights a week to seven nights a week with the addition of weekend newscasts. Both stations are owned by Sinclair Broadcasting.

That will mean a few weeks before the start of the May sweeps, [WGRZ]’s newscast on WUTV will be getting stronger lead-ins than [WIVB]’s 10 O’Clock News gets on sister station WNLO from little-watched CW programming here.

Previously, WIVB’s weekend morning newscast was one hour long, airing at 7 a.m. Saturdays and 8 a.m. Sundays. The expanded newscasts, anchored by Nalina Shapiro (pictured) with meteorologist Bryan Shaw, run from 7 to 9 a.m. both days.

Diana Fairbanks

Fairbanks has solo anchored the 5:30 p.m. newscast on WIVB and the 10 p.m. newscast on WNLO since joining the station last year. In her new role, she will co-anchor the morning newscast alongside Jordan Williams, who joins the station this week. She will also anchor the noon newscast.

“It is something we’re going to try. I was asked if I would like to give it a shot,” Fairbanks told Pergament.

Fairbanks’ replacement in the evenings not yet been announced, but Pergament notes Dan Postles and Jacquie Walker, who co-anchor the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts, may trade off as solo anchors at 5:30 and 10 p.m.

Previously, Riley has worked at WLEX in Lexington, Ky. and WIVB in Buffalo. She will be the weekend morning meteorologist, as well as reporting on environmental and weather-related stories and features.

Jordan Williams

Williams will join the station after four years at KRGV in Rio Grande Valley, Tx., where he also anchors the morning show. He will begin in Buffalo in January.

Williams replaces Joe Arena, who departed for Pittsburgh in October. Ed Drantch, who is currently filling in on the morning newscast, will return to his reporting duties, according to Pergament.

Lou Raguse

The men are accused of stalking a Dunkirk man named Mikey Gonzales.  “When aggravated, Mikey makes noises and uncontrollably slaps himself in the face,” said the station’s website.  “Years of bullying has caused Mikey to hit himself so many times he lost sight in one eye.”  The pair of suspects are accused of aggravating Mikey, videotaping his outbursts, then posting the video to youtube.

Raguse was standing outside the courthouse as the men left their arraignment.  When the WIVB reporter first began asking the two suspects if they were going to fight the charges, he lost his microphone in a scuffle.  Then later, one of the men charged Raguse and shoved him into a light pole.  You can watch the report after the jump. continued…

Lauren Brill

Brill joins WIVB from MSG Variety, a 24-hour high school sports network in New York City, where she is a multimedia journalist. Beginning August 29, she will anchor sports on WIVB’s 6, 10 and 11 p.m. weekend newscasts.

“Lauren will bring an entirely new level of coverage to the Western New York sports scene,” news director Joseph Schlaerth said. “She’ll cover high school, college and professional teams, but she will also look for the everyday athlete – people who may not be professional but who train just as hard. Lauren will make an immediate impact on sports coverage here.”

Victoria Hong

“I’m very appreciative of my time at Channel 4, they took me at a serious time in my life,” Hong told Buffalo media blogger Alan Pergament. “I’m getting older and it’s time for a new adventure.”

Hong originally joined WIVB in 1993, but left three years later. She returned to WIVB in 2003 after stints at WPHL in Philadelphia and WRGZ in Buffalo. According to Pergament, she plans to leave television altogether.

Brittni Smallwood

Smallwood, who will report for the morning and noon newscasts, is one of two that joined WIVB from WETM today. The other is Steve Vesey, who will join WIVB’s sports team.

Steve Vesey

WIVB’s has lost both of their sportscasters this year. Sports anchor Paul Peck left the station, and the television business entirely, in March. Sports director John Murphy is leaving next month, reportedly to take a multimedia job with the Buffalo Bills.

“It was an unusual situation,” WIVB news director Joseph Schlaerth told the Buffalo News. “I don’t have an exit date for Murph . . . but we expect that he will be spending time with Steve to help ease the transition.” continued…

The news was first reported by Buffalo media reporter Alan Pergament, who writes that Peck’s exit is tied “devalued sports coverage” at WIVB. He has accepted a job at AXA Advisors.

“It’s been my life for a long time,” Peck told Pergament. “I’m taking this leap of faith in this new job. I’m excited. I gave it a lot of thought. It is definitely the right time and it’s a wonderful opportunity to pursue.”

Peck has been a sports anchor at WIVB since 1988. The station has not named a replacement.

Raguse joins the station from KMSB in Tuscon, where news operations were shut down earlier this month. Guggenmos also joins WIVB from Tucson, where she was the weekend co-anchor at KVOA.

The pair met while working in Sioux Falls — Guggenmos at KDLT and Raguse at KELO. They were married in 2010.

“Emily and Lou are both strong journalists who will fit in perfectly with our winning team here,” news director Joseph Schlaerth tells TVSpy via email.
