Sam Dick, anchor for Lexington, KY, CBS affiliate WKYT is on the mend after taking a spill on his bicycle over the weekend.

“My shoulder feels really sore, but they say nothing is broken,” Dick told WKYT in a story about his accident. “The helmet is key. I don’t know how bad I’d be hurt, they say I have a mild concussion.”

While training for an upcoming event in Maryland, Dick hit a Jeep Cherokee. “It wasn’t his fault, he or she did realize how fast I was going. They pulled out in front of me down quite a ways, but I was going so fast I caught up with them really fast. And I’m unclear how, all I remember is smashing into the pavement. I take full responsibility for it.”

Dick was treated and released at a local hospital.

Jennifer Palumbo (pictured left) has added the WKYT 4:00 p.m. news to her anchor duties. Palumbo already anchors the 10:00 p.m. news on Sinclair’s FOX affiliate WDKY. Palumbo replaces Stacy Ellison (pictured right) who is leaving the station Friday.

The newscast takes the place of Anderson Cooper‘s syndicated daytime talk show, which will end its 2-year run in a few months. When the newscast launches, Cooper will be moved to WKYT’s subchannel through the summer.

“There’s no greater lead-in to local news than local news,” WKYT news director Robert Thomas told the Herald-Leader. “That’s why it was a smart decision for us.”

DeAnn Stephens, (above) is returning to the station to report for the newscast. Two additional employees will also be hired.

Andy Cunningham

Cunningham moves to Louisiana from Kentucky, where he has been a general assignment reporter at WKYT in Lexington since March. This is Cunningham’s second stint at the station. He previously worked there from 2007-09.

Cunningham has also been a reporter at KABB in San Antonio, KFXA in Cedar Rapids and KLJB in Davenport, Iowa.

“We already produce the most morning news during the week so it made perfect sense for us to look at bringing our morning news commitment to weekends,” general manager Chris Mossman, who joined the station last month, said in a statement.

The newscasts will air from 6 to 8 a.m. on Saturday and from 8 to 9 a.m. on Sunday. Weekend evening anchor Elizabeth Dorsett (pictured) and meteorologist Keri Hall will helm the newscasts. Beginning in December, general assignment reporter Brittany Pelletz will begin anchoring the weekend evening newscasts.

Mossman will also serve as regional vice president of Gray’s Kentucky and Tennesse stations, which include WBKO in Bowling Green, WYMT in Hazard and WVLT in Knoxville.

Mark Gentner, who has been general sales manager at WITN since 2007, will be promoted to general manager at the NBC affiliate. In his new role, he will oversee the final stages of construction on WITN’s new studio building in Greenville, N.C. continued…

Stations in Lexington, which is about 40 miles north of Danville, have devoted coverage this week to Centre College, which is the smallest of the four venues to host a debate this election cycle. The school became the smallest institution to ever hold a general election debate in 2000, the first time it hosted a Vice Presidential debate.

More than 3,000 media credentials were issued ahead of Thursday night’s debate. Wayne Martin

Martin’s retirement caps a 25-year career in television, the past 19 of them as WKYT’s GM. He joined the Gray Television station in 1993.

“Wayne represents the best of what we expect out of our managers, being an excellent professional manager and devoted to his community and his station,” Gray Television COO Bob Prather said in a statement. “We want all of our television stations to be part of the fabric of the community, and Wayne has clearly made sure that WKYT is an important part of the fabric of the Lexington market viewing area.”

Barbara Bailey (pictured left) who currently anchors WKYT’s 10 a.m., noon and 12:30 p.m. newscasts, will begin next week as the anchor of the 5 and 6 a.m. newscasts. The current 5 and 6 a.m. anchor, Stacy Ellison (pictured right) will take over for Bailey at 10 a.m., noon and 12:30 p.m. The changes go into effect next Wednesday, which coincides with the first day of school in Fayette County.

“A change like this makes sense to make on the first day of school when people get back into morning routines,” news director Robert Thomas told the Herald-Leader.

Chris Bailey

Bailey left WKYT in 2008 to join WSAZ, the NBC-affiliate in Charleston. His first day back at WKYT will be March 5.

“No one knows Kentucky weather like Chris Bailey,” WKYT president and general manager Wayne Martin said in a statement. “Regardless the season or what the weather has in store for us, Chris has always demonstrated a passion and dedication that is second to none.”

Bailey replaces T.G. Shuck, who announced yesterday he is leaving the station to spend more time with his family.

Shuck announced this week that his final day with the CBS-affiliate will be Friday, March 2nd.  In total, he has spent 22 years with WKYT.

“After 22 years at WKYT, 16 of them doing weather and the last 11 years as Chief Meteorologist, the long hours and crazy schedules haven’t been easy on my wife and 3 children,” Shuck wrote in a post on his Facebook page.  “This time in my girls’ young lives will never come again, so it’s especially important for me to be a part of that now.”

A couple of weeks ago, Dick was rushing around his house when a four-inch shard of wood got lodged in his foot.

“We have very thick pine tongue-and-groove floors. We had them refinished, but there are spots in it where splinters and pieces of wood come up,” Dick told the Lexington Herald-Leader. “All I know is I rushed through a hallway and the next thing I know, I felt this shooting pain like a knife had been stuck up through my foot.” continued…

It turns out that the power outage, which knocked the station off the air for around 10 minutes, was caused by an animal gnawing through a power line on the station’s property.

Mike Kanarek, WKYT’s vice president of operations, told the Lexington Herald-Leader that the station switched to a back-up generator almost immediately after the animal cut off electricity but it took a few minutes for the transmitter to resume broadcasting.

Kanarek didn’t specify what type of animal caused the disturbance.

Conan O’Brien

The original source of the copy was CBS Newspath, according to staffers at two stations featured in the clip. Although “Conan” only showed 18 stations, a search of TVEyes.com reveals that 27 stations reported the story using identical wording (a full list, including markets and affiliations, is after the jump.)

The script was tease copy for Monday’s “Eye on Entertainment” package, filed by CBS Newspath correspondent Sandra Hughes. The full version reads: “Conan O’Brien may be about to push the envelope on late night television. And British songstress Adele seems to have pushed her voice too far. CBS’ Sandra Hughes has those stories and more, in your Monday morning ‘Eye on Entertainment.’”

South Bend’s WSBT, which was featured in the Conan clip, addressed the situation on the 6 a.m. newscast this morning, calling it the “dark secret” of the news business. continued…

According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, Fisher has left the station after three years to accept a job in pharmaceutical sales. Longtime WKYT sports anchor Rob Bromley (pictured), who was seen on the 11 p.m. newscast before Fisher joined the station, will return to the evenings. He will be the sports anchor on the 5, 5:30, 6 and 11 p.m newscasts.

“I wanted to streamline the anchor teams,” WKYT news director Robert Thomas told the Herald-Leader. “We have an anchor team at 5, 5:30 and 6 that does really well, and I wanted the exact same team doing the 11.” continued…
