Dionne Miller Lands at Rival Station

miller wls_croppedWLS has announced the addition former WFLD sports anchor Dionne Miller to its sports team.

“During her time here in Chicago, Dionne Miller has built a stellar reputation as an aggressive reporter who tells great stories and connects with viewers,” Jennifer Graves, VP & news director for the Chicago ABC owned station, said in a statement.

Miller left the Chicago FOX owned station at the beginning of October. Before WFLD, Miller worked for FOX Sports Ohio, KSVI-KHMT in Billings, Mont., WPTZ in Burlington, Vt., XETV in San Diego and WCSN in Columbus, Ohio.

WLS Reporter Who Covered Disability Issues Retiring After 23 Years

meyer cropped wlsKaren Meyer, the WLS reporter who covered disability issues for the weekend morning show at the Chicago ABC owned station, has announced her retirement.

“As a person who is deaf  in a hearing world, she overcame obstacles to achieve immeasurable success,” WLS news director Jennifer Graves said in a statement. “She has worked tirelessly at ABC 7 to shed light on issues pertaining to people with disabilities – reporting stories often ignored by other media outlets.”

Meyer, who started at WLS in 1991, was a professor at De Paul University from 2003 to 2014. In 1994, she was appointed by President Clinton to be vice chairperson of the President’s Committee on Employment for People with Disabilities.

Her last day is September 28.

Doug Whitmire Named WLS 10:00 p.m. EP

whitmore wlsChicago ABC owned station WLS has promoted Doug Whitmire to executive producer of the 10:00 p.m. news.

“Doug has done a terrific job leading the morning team for the past 6 ½ years,” WLS VP and news director Jennifer Graves said in a statement. “Doug’s knowledge of Chicago and the ABC 7 newsroom makes him the ideal choice to take the reins at 10 PM.”

Whitmire has been the EP of the morning news since 2008.

Before coming to WLS in 2003, Whitmire worked at WTVG in Toledo, OH.

The station said he would split his time between newscasts until a morning replacement is hired.

WLS to Add Assistant News Director

burke wlsWLS has announced Sarah Dunlap Burke will join the ABC owned Chicago station as assistant news director August 25.

Burke comes to WLS from WBZ in Boston where she was the acting news director.

“Sarah Burke is a strong news leader with impressive experience,” WLS VP and news director Jennifer Graves said in a statement. “Sarah understands the Chicago market’s love of news because she grew up here, and that’s a great plus for us too.”

Before joining WBZ in April 2013, Burke was an executive producer at WCBS in New York. She also worked at KCNC in Denver.

ABC News on Apple TV Goes Local

Lost Remote reports on ABC News’ Apple TV launch this morning, which in addition to a variety of national and global news content, offers some local news flavor.

The new Apple TV product, which launched this morning at 10amET, offers a local news section, which showcases top video-on-demand clips from some of the country’s biggest markets. At launch, content from eight ABC-owned stations — including WABC in New York, KABC in Los Angeles, WLS in Chicago, WPVI in Philadelphia, KGO in San Francisco, KTRK in Houston, WTVD in Raleigh and KFSN in Fresno — can be found under the local tab. Content from WISN, Hearst’s ABC affiliate in Milwaukee, will also be offered.

“The local experience is something that we’re very eager to launch and then expand upon,” Doug Vance, ABC News VP of Product Strategy, said.

Janet Hundley Named News Director at WTMJ

wtmj logoJanet Hundley is joining WTMJ, Journal Broadcast Group’s NBC affiliate in Milwaukee, as news director. Hundley will start in her new role June 17.

“Janet is a proven news leader with a reputation for journalistic excellence,” WTMJ vice president and general manager Joe Poss said in a statement. “She understands and embraces the changing needs of our viewers here in the Midwest and, most importantly, she exemplifies the strong values and integrity that are so critical in a newsroom.”

Hundley comes from Chicago, where she has been assistant news director at ABC-owned WLS since 2002. She has previously worked as news director at WTVG in Toledo.

“It will be my distinct privilege to lead this newsroom and to serve the viewers of Southeastern Wisconsin. It’s a responsibility that I don’t take lightly and I’m thrilled to get started,” Hundley said.

Terrell Brown to Join WLS as Reporter

Terrell BrownTerrell Brown will join Chicago ABC owned station WLS as general assignment reporter and contributing anchor.

Brown, who starts in two weeks, comes to WLS from CBS News where he anchored Up to the Minute and the CBS Morning News. He was also a fill-in anchor for CBS Evening News on the weekend.

Brown previously worked as an anchor and reporter for WWBT in Richmond, VA.

Chicago Station Invests in Investigative Unit

wls_304Chicago media writer Robert Feder reports Chicago ABC owned station WLS‘ investment in its investigative unit is good news for local television.

Feder says WLS chief investigative reporter Chuck Goudie “heads a franchise that has expanded its brand, doubled its personnel and elevated local TV to a new competitive level in recent months.”

“Our investigative team has been a hallmark of ABC 7 Eyewitness News, working incredibly hard to find stories important to our viewers,” Jennifer Graves, vice president and news director, said in a statement. “By expanding resources and adding a consumer focus, we are building on the I-Team’s strength of enterprise reporting.  I’m very proud of the quality work our I-Team contributes to our news product on a daily basis.” Read more

Chicago Meteorologist Twitter Bullies Rival over Forecast

Apparently Jerry Taft, meteorologist for Chicago ABC owned station WLS, was on vacation when the region was hit by a snowstorm.

Taft noticed Brant Miller, meteorologist for cross town rival NBC owned station WMAQ, predicted a lot more snow than the three to six inches delivered. So he tweeted out a screen shot of Miller telling Chicago viewers about the snow dump that never came.

Like any good bullyfest going down behind the 7-Eleven after school, WCNC chief meteorologist Brad Panovich got in a long distance shot from the Charlotte, NC NBC affiliate. So much for the brotherhood of the peacock. Read more

Four ABC Owned Stations Pick Up Rachael Ray Show

ray show_croppedStarting this Fall, CBS Television Distribution’s Rachael Ray show will air on seven of eight ABC owned stations.

The show will make the switch from CBS owned stations in Los Angeles (KCAL) and San Francisco (KBCW) to ABC Owned stations KABC and KGO. In Chicago, the show will move from Tribune’s CW affiliate in Chicago (WGN) to ABC owned station WLS and in Houston it will switch from Titan Broadcasting’s KUBE to ABC owned station KTRK.

Rachael Ray currently airs on ABC owned stations WABC in New York, WPVI in Philadelphia and WTVD in Raleigh-Durham.

The show is expected to be a replacement for the short-lived Katie Couric talk show Katie.
