ABC, NBC and CBS affiliates in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and Dallas broadcast national coverage from their affiliated networks of the Pope’s final farewell.

Fox News Channel’s Rick Folbaum anchored a special report that was broadcast on the Fox O&Os. KTTV in Los Angeles incorporated coverage of the farewell address into the morning newscast, anchored by Steve Edwards, instead of taking the national report.

Without national coverage to broadcast, CW affiliates produced their own special reports. Sukanya Krishnan and Frances Rivera anchored on WPIX in New York City, Frank Buckley and Michaela Pereira anchored on KTLA in Los Angeles, and Steve Sanders and Dina Bair anchored on WGN in Chicago.

Philly’s CW affiliate WPSG is owned by CBS and operated as a duopoly with KYW. KDAF, the CW affiliate in Dallas, had no special coverage of the Pope’s farewell.

Green has worked at KYW since 2004. During her time at the station, she has reported for both KYW and sister station WPSG, the CW affiliate. She has also co-anchored KYW’s weekend morning newscasts.

Stations in major markets across the East Coast chose to preempt, or partially preempt, network morning shows Monday to remain in extended local coverage of Hurricane Sandy.

In New York City, where the subways and buses have been shut down since Sunday night, the local stations all began live storm coverage at 4amET. NBC O&O WNBC went to “Today” at 7 a.m. and returned to local programming at 7:30 a.m. WCBS aired only the first hour of “CBS This Morning,” and WABC aired “Good Morning America” in its entirety.

In Philadelphia, KYW joined “CBS This Morning” a few minutes after 7 a.m. and continued its local newscast on CW affiliate WPSG. WCAU aired the first half hour of “Today” and returned to local coverage at 7:30 a.m., and WPVI aired “Good Morning America.” continued…

Rob Ellis

Ellis currently hosts a radio show for WIP, the CBS-owned radio station in Philadelphia. He will continue in that role when he joins KYW-WPSG later this month. He will serve as a sports anchor and reporter for the stations, contributing to all newscasts and sports specials.

Prior to his current role at WIP, which he has held since 2007, Ellis was a senior producer for Comcast SportsNet’s “Daily News Live” and “Pro Football Now.” He is a Pennsylvania native.

Fehlinger will replace Kate Bilo as weather forecaster on the morning show. Bilo, in turn, replaces chief meteorologist Kathy Orr, reporting the weather for the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts on KYW. Orr will shift to the 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. broadcasts, citing a desire to reduce her workload as her children get older.

Fehlinger has been at WCBS for only a short time — she joined the CBS O&O in New York in March after four years with Accuweather. Originally a general news reporter, Fehlinger switched her focus to weather in 2006. She calls her first weather report, an update on tornadoes in the Midwest for Fox News, the highlight of her career.“I never had a more exciting moment professionally,” she said. “I knew I had chosen the right career.”
