Mark Lund to Lead Boston’s WBZ-WSBK

Mark Lund has been named president and general manager of Boston’s CBS O&O, WBZ-WSBK. Lund will succeed Ed Piette who is retiring after 43 years in local TV, six of those leading WBZ-WSBK.

In a statement posted to Broadcasting & Cable, Lund said, “I am honored to have this terrific opportunity to rejoin CBS and come back to the stations where I got my start and an area that my wife Amy, a Boston College grad, and I have long considered our home.”

Lund, who is the son of former CBS president Peter Lund, comes from NBC Owned Television Stations where he was executive vice president of sales. He got his start in television working as an intern for WBZ in the early eighties.

Piette, whose last day is one week from Friday told B&C,

“The only hard part about my decision is saying goodbye to the incredibly talented and dedicated team we have in Boston. They have been terrific and I will be forever grateful for their support and friendship.”

Boston Stations Return to Air Following Sunday Antenna Malfunction

Four Boston stations returned to the air this afternoon, following an antenna malfunction that occurred on Sunday night.

CBS-owned WBZ, and its MyNetworkTV sister station WSBK, ABC-affiliate WCVB, and PBS station WGBX were all knocked off the air around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday after a technical malfunction occurred at the broadcast tower they all share.

WCVB was able to quickly switch to an auxiliary antenna, and the station has been broadcasting at reduced power since Sunday night.

In order to return all of the stations to the air, technicians moved their signals to the tower of PBS station WGBH and transferred WGBH’s programming to WCVB’s auxiliary antenna. continued…

WSBK Joins Competitive 10 p.m. News Race in Boston

Boston’s WSBK will shift its evening news to 10 p.m. this fall, pitting the station’s program directly against competing broadcasts from Boston stations WFXT and WLVI.

WSBK, currently an independent station also known as Channel 38, recently announced it would become a MyNetworkTV affiliate. The CBS-owned station is a sister station of CBS affiliate WBZ. WSBK currently airs a half-hour evening newscast as 9 p.m., but will shift the newscast to 10 p.m. as part of the MyNetworkTV partnership, The Boston Globe reported.

This will put it in direct competition at 10 p.m. with WFXT’s evening news and WLVI’s evening news, which is staffed and operated by sister station WHDH. The WSBK broadcast will be anchored by Kate Merrill, who will be joined by meteorologist Todd Gutner and sports director Steve Burton.

With PR Appointments in Boston and San Francisco, CBS Further Coheres Its Local Properties

CBS has appointed two market communications directors, reflecting the company’s increased focus on refining its footprint in local media.

Ro Dooley-Webster has been named Boston market communications director and Akilah Bolden-Monifa has been named San Francisco Bay Area market communications director.

Dooley-Webster and Bolden-Monifa currently manage communications for the CBS stations in their respective markets. With this appointment, they will now oversee communications for all of CBS’s local properties, including TV, radio, and online, in their markets.

In announcing the appointments, CBS Local Media COO Anton Guitano trumpeted the success that the company has seen in both markets since it launched CBSSanFrancisco.com and CBSBoston.com, which brought its local TV and radio properties under one online banner.

Dooley-Webster has been serving as communications director for CBS-affiliate WBZ and its independent sister station WSBK. Bolden-Monifa has been the communications director for CBS-affiliate KPIX as well as CW-affiliate KBCW.
