Dill, who came to WSPA in 2011 was a weekday anchor at crosstown rival WYFF when he found himself on the outs after an anchor shake up at the station.

In a press release announcing the move, vice president and general manager Bob Romine said, “Gordon’s experience in the market and his commitment to viewers and the community make him the obvious choice for this position.”

Dill will anchor the 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m newscasts replacing Chris Cato who is moving to WCAU in Philadelphia.

Cato comes to Philly from Greenville, S.C., where he is the evening anchor at CBS affiliate WSPA. He was named 2012 Reporter of the Year by the South Carolina Broadcasters Association. At WCAU, he will co-anchor the weekend 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts alongsinde Denise Nakano.

In announcing the hire, WCAU vice president of news Anzio Williams called Cato an “engaging and versatile talent.”

“His skills will complement our mission of delivering the best news and information to viewers every day,” Williams said.

Cates has worked for Media General since 1999. Most recently, he worked WSPA in Spartanburg, SC, where he has been director of digital content since 2009. Prior to that, he was news director at WKRG in Mobile.

Almost three months ago, Jimmy Moore, a photojournalist at Spartanburg CBS-affiliate WSPA, was paralyzed in a car crash.

Last night, WSPA’s Chris Cato did a six-minute report on Moore’s progress called “Learning to Live Again.” The former photojournalist was married this summer to WSPA nightside producer Jaimie Reda; the two have spent the first months of their marriage in a rehabilitation center, as Moore undergoes rigorous physical therapy. continued…

The move marks a promotion for Cromwell, who has been WJTV’s director of revenue since 2009. Before that, he has held sales management positions at Birmingham’s WBMA, Atlanta’s WGCL and Jacksonville’s WJXX.

With three days until Hurricane Irene’s projected landfall, local stations are preparing for the storm in some new ways, like developing smartphone apps with weather trackers, and some traditional ways, like delivering messages from emergency management. For stations on the southern east coast, anticipating a hurricane is hardly new. So how do producers and reporters find fresh things to report on in the days leading up to a storm?

James Walter Moore, Jr., was driving an SUV owned by the station — which is the CBS affiliate that serves western North Carolina and South Carolina — when a spare tire fell off the car ahead of him on I-85. Moore swerved to avoid the tire and struck a concrete barrier with his car, The Spartanburg Herald-Journal reports.

The crash occurred at 2 p.m. yesterday and blocked traffic for several hours on the highway. No charges have been filed in the incident.

-Our news director, Dan Cates, was really smart in the way he asked if Dan, Diane and I would do a sixth hour of Daybreak from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. We’d been on the air since four o’clock Monday morning at that point. He made it seem like it was our idea.
