Jamie Muro Leaving WTNH

Jamie Muro has announced he’s leaving Hartford-New Haven, CT, ABC affiliate WTNH.

The Laurel posted a station memo saying in part, “Jamie is heading over to the dark side, working in media relations for Sullivan & LeShane in Hartford. While I won’t miss his Dallas Cowboy helmet, I’ll definitely miss Jamie both on-air and in-person. Please join me in wishing him nothing but the best!”

Muro started at WTNH in September 2004. Before coming to WTNH he worked at WTLV-WJXX in Jacksonville, FL, WSLS in Roanoke, VA, and KREX in Grand Junction, CO.

According to the Hartford Courant Muro begins his new job in early August.

WTNH Gives Rival Anchor Some Face Time

WTIC anchor Alison Morris (center) accidentally pulled doubled duty while anchoring the 11:00 p.m. news for the FOX affiliate in Hartford-New Haven,CT.

Morris popped up in the monitor behind rival ABC affiliate WTNH anchors Darren Kramer and Sonia Baghdady while the pair were tossing to break.

A sharp-eyed viewer caught the gaffe and sent it out on his twitter feed saying, “See the screen behind the anchors on @WTNH‘s 11 PM newscast tonight? Yeah, that’s @FOXCT‘s newscast. Whoops! #tvnews pic.twitter.com/AfI0JNsXwc.”

Stuck In a News Van Overnight in Blizzard: WTNH Reporter Tells Her Story

WTNH reporter Jacquie Slater and photographer J-P Coleman became part of the story surrounding the recent blizzard that pummeled the Northeast when they got stuck in their news van on the side of a Connecticut interstate.

Slater said the two were trying to get back to the Hartford-New Haven ABC affiliate after a live shot when they got on the highway. “Within two minutes of being on the highway I just had the feeling that this was not going to go well,” Slater told WTNH anchor and host Ann Nyberg on her local show, “Nyberg.”

“So we went around this car and he went to get back on what seemed to be the road,” Slater said. “And then at that point I saw the mile marker to my right and I said, ‘You’re off the road.’ And he said, ‘What?’ And I said, ‘You’re off the road.’” continued…

Erin Logan Named Weekend Anchor at WTNH

Erin Logan has been named weekend evening anchor at WTNH, the ABC affiliate in New Haven.

Logan joined the station in 2011 as a general assignment reporter.

“In her time here she has proven to be an aggressive reporter and one our leaders in carrying out the brand on-air,” news director Erik Schrader wrote in a memo to WTNH staffers Tuesday. “Before coming to this station, Erin was a weekday anchor earlier in her career, so the combo position accents many of her strengths.”

Cable Networks Rely on Affiliate Coverage of Connecticut School Shooting

Fox News, CNN and MSNBC have all been in breaking news coverage of the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn. since shortly before 11 a.m. Friday morning. The early coverage provided by FNC, CNN and MSNBC relied heavily on affiliates from Hartford and New York City as the cable networks rushed to get their own correspondents to the scene.

Fox News used aerial coverage from WNYW, the Fox O&O in New York City, as well as images from WFSB, the CBS affiliate in Hartford, while WNYW’s chopper was en route.

MSNBC used aerial pictures provided by NBC O&O WVIT, which was the first station in Hartford to report the shooting this morning.

CNN is affiliated with three Hartford stations — WFSB, WTIC and WTNH, as well as New York City ABC O&O WABC (pictured). The network has used coverage from all of them today.

Hartford Stations Cover Shooting at Elementary School

Local Hartford stations broke in to regular programming this morning to cover the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

NBC-owned WVIT reported the news at 10:26 a.m. with a quick update at from morning anchor Brad Drazen who asked viewers to stay tuned for more information before going to break.

CBS affiliate WFSB reported the news at 10:29 a.m. with anchor Eric Parker. ABC affiliate WTNH reported it at 10:30 a.m., breaking into the “Rachael Ray” show” with a special report anchored by Keith Kountz.

News 12 Connecticut arrived on the scene at 10:53 a.m., cutting in to reporter Frank Recchia‘s piece and quickly going to live footage from its Chopper 12.

Suspicious Packages Delivered to WVIT, WTNH

As stations up and down the East Coast were live with Hurricane Sandy coverage throughout the night (more on that later), The Hartford Courant is reporting that suspicious packages were delivered to two stations in Hartford around 4amET Monday.

Packages were dropped outside the front foyer at NBC O&O WVIT and near ABC affiliate WTNH. The areas were shut down and the bomb squad was called in to investigate, West Hartford police said. The Courant has details on a a suspect:

West Hartford police said they are looking for a white man, possibly in his 40s, with grayish hair who was driving a late model small silver car, possibly a Chevrolet Cobalt or Monte Carlo with a spoiler and sunroof.

Erica Grow Leaves WTNH for WUSA

WTNH (ABC) Hartford/New Haven meteorologist Erica Grow is heading south to Washington, DC for a weekend weather and weekday reporting gig at CBS affiliate WUSA.

“My hours were cut back to part-time at WTNH and the new job is a full-time one,” Grow tells the Hartford Courant. “While I had planned to stay in Connecticut longer, Washington D.C. will be a return to the big, big market.”

Grow joined WTNH in April 2011 from WPVI in Philadelphia where she was weekend meteorologist. She’s also worked in Harrisburg, PA and Midland, TX.

WTNH Hires Jeff Valin to Anchor Weekend Mornings

Jeff Valin has been hired at WTNH, the ABC-affiliate in Hartford-New Haven, according to the New Haven Register.

The new role is a return to Hartford for Valin, who was a reporter at Fox-affiliate WTIC from 2008-10. He was most recently an anchor-reporter at WGGB, the ABC-affiliate in Springfield, MA.

Valin will be the weekend morning anchor at WTNH. He debuted this weekend.

LIN Reaches Retrans Deal with Cox, Averting Blackout

LIN Media and Cox Communications reached a new retrans agreement on Wednesday, avoiding a blackout of LIN stations in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Virginia, and Alabama.

The previous retrans deal was set to expire at midnight on Wednesday.

“We are pleased to inform you that we have reached a contract with Cox,” LIN announced in a statement posted on the websites of stations affected by the negotiations. “We appreciate your tremendous support throughout these negotiations.” continued…

WTNH Re-Signs Anchor Sonia Baghdady, After Advertising Her Job

Anchor Sonia Baghdady has signed a new contract with WTNH, following a period of negotiations that included the station posting a job opening for her position.

“There was a rumor out there that the main anchors were going to leave,” WTNH general manager Mark Higgins told the New Haven Register, discussing Baghdady’s new contract. “It’s standard to post for a position… but it all worked out.”

Earlier this month, WTNH posted a job listing on its website announcing that the station had “an opening for a main anchor” who would work alongside Darren Kramer. Baghdady currently anchors the station’s 5, 5:30, and 11 p.m. newscasts with Kramer.

The job listing has been removed as Baghdady retains her seat next to Kramer.

Beloved WTNH Meteorologist Dr. Mel Passes Away

Longtime WTNH meteorologist Mel Goldstein, who was known to Connecticut viewers simply as Dr. Mel, passed away this morning. He was 66.

Goldstein had been battling multiple myeloma–a cancer of plasma cells–for the past fifteen years.

He became chief meteorologist at WTNH in 1986 and was a fixture on the station until he retired in October 2011.

“We not only lost a great journalist today, but a great humanitarian and close friend,” WTNH vice president and general manager Mark Higgins said in an email to staff. continued…

WTNH Posts Listing for Current Anchor’s Job

In a move that could be either a bargaining tactic or a piece of preemptive hiring, or both, WTNH has posted a job listing on its website that’s essentially the position currently held by anchor Sonia Baghdady.

“WTNH/News 8 in Connecticut has an opening for a main anchor,” the post announces, before stating, “You’ll be anchoring most of your newscasts sitting next to… Darren Kramer.”

Baghdady, who has been with WTNH since 2002, currently anchors WTNH’s 5, 5:30, and 11 p.m. newscasts alongside Kramer.

News director Erik Schrader told TVSpy today that Baghdady is currently employed by the station, but he refused to comment on the job posting or the anchor’s future with WTNH. continued…

Anne Craig Promoted to Weekdays at WTNH

After just two months as a reporter and weekend anchor at WTNH, Anne Craig has been promoted to weekday morning anchor.

“We are always excited to promote from within, and Anne’s time on Good Morning Connecticut Weekend showed us that she could transition nicely to weekday mornings,” WTNH news director Erik Schrader said in a statement.

Craig will co-anchor the newscast with Chris Velardi. She replaces Kristen Cusato, who left the Hartford-New Haven ABC-affiliate last week to join the Alzheimer’s Association of Connecticut as a regional director.

His House Destroyed by Irene, Longtime WTNH Meteorologist Now Part of State Campaign for Aid

Mel Goldstein, who retired as WTNH chief meteorologist last month, had his house destroyed by Hurricane Irene and now Connecticut Senator Dick Blumenthal is using his ordeal as an example in trying to win federal emergency aid for the state.

“Mel Goldstein and his wife Arlene, whose home was completely destroyed by flooding from Irene, are being told their homeowners insurance will not cover the damage,” Blumenthal declared, speaking on the Senate floor earlier this week. “The only hope they have is FEMA flood insurance and other FEMA assistance.” continued…
