Crisson, who announced the move via facebook, wrote a goodbye letter to fans saying,
Thank you for letting me tell your stories – through laughter, tears and prayers, we have made it through. Please know I’m leaving on a good note for a great opportunity at WSB-TV (still abc) in Atlanta. I know you’ll be kind to the next reporter here so he/she will stick around for a long time too. We’ll stay connected (sing our promo – keeping you connected) and stay classy Raleigh! . -Shae.
“Katie” will air at 3 p.m. in all but two of the top 10 markets. The exceptions are Dallas and Washington, DC, where ABC affiliates WFAA and WJLA will run “Katie” in the 4 p.m. timeslot, which was vacated by daytime fixture Oprah Winfrey last June.
The eight ABC O&Os — WABC in New York, KABC in Los Angeles, WLS in Chicago, WPVI in Philadelphia, KGO in San Francisco, KTRK in Houston, WTVD in Raleigh-Durham and KFSN in Fresno — are sticking with a commitment to local newscasts, some of which launched in the wake of Winfrey’s departure, in the 4 p.m. time slot.
Welch has worked at WPVI, the ABC O&O in Philadelphia, since 1992. Most recently, she was the station’s vice president of programming.
“Caroline Welch’s proven commitment to excellence in local TV programming, along with the wide-ranging expertise she’s gained working closely with management and staff across-the-board at WPVI-TV, made her the ideal choice for the top post at WTVD-TV,” Rebecca Campbell, president of the ABC O&Os, said in a statement. “The first thing I’m going to do is to reconnect with everybody in the building and figure out where the departments are strategically,” Idler told Time Out Chicago’s Robert Feder recently. “Beyond that, as far as any long-terms plans or specific goals for the station, it’s way too early to talk about them.”
Idler joined WLS as an account executive in 1998 and served as vice president and general sales manager at the station before leaving to run WTVD, the ABC O&O in Raleigh-Durham. Read more
Idler joins WLS from WTVD, the ABC O&O in Raleigh-Durham, where he has been president and general manager for five years. The new position returns him to WLS, where he was vice president and general sales manager from 2004-07.
“John Idler’s outstanding track record in Raleigh-Durham and his earlier local TV management experience in Chicago demonstrate a consistent commitment to excellence in community service and station operations,” Rebecca Campbell, president of the ABC O&Os, said in a statement. “We all congratulate John on his promotion as he returns to WLS-TV in Chicago as President and General Manager.” Read more
ABC News offered its affiliates a special report at 3pmET/2pmCT this afternoon with the news President Obama endorsed gay marriage in an interview with “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts.
ABC has eight O&Os that often promote ABC’s big exclusives. Five of the stations — WABC in New York, WLS in Chicago, WPVI in Philadelphia, KTRK in Houston and WTVD in Raleigh-Durham — aired the report with no special programming on either side, returning to “General Hospital” at its conclusion.
Interestingly, the three West Coast stations — KABC in Los Angeles, KGO in San Francisco and KFSN in Fresno — also did not promote the news on air, despite the fact that each has an 11amPT newscast that preceded the special report. (KABC’s newscast is an hour long, while KGO’s and KFSN’s are only 30 minutes.) All three stations aired a report from ABC’s Karen Travers on North Carolina residents voting to ban gay marriage on their respective newscasts. Read more
Emily Barr, who has been president and general manager of WLS since 1997, is leaving the Chicago ABC O&O to lead Post-Newsweek Stations, the television broadcasting division of the Washington Post Company.
Barr will join Post-Newsweek in July, replacing Alan Frank, who is retiring as president and CEO at the end of the year. Her last day at WLS is today.
“We are so fortunate to have Emily Barr join us,” Donald Graham, chairman and CEO of the Washington Post Company, said in a statement. “She’s been an outstanding manager in one of the greatest companies in the industry and a force for innovation everywhere she’s been.” Read more
Scott, who has been with the Raleigh ABC station on and off since 1998, was born without hip sockets and underwent surgery in September to replace both of her hips.
Rehabilitation took longer than expected because Scott encountered a severe amount of pain while she learned to walk again. In addition to retraining her muscles, she had to retrain her nervous system.
“I thought I’d be better in three months,” Scott told TVSpy recently, speaking about her prolonged leave of absence. “I’m sure it was incredibly hard and frustrating for everybody [at WTVD].” Read more
