Sinclair Names Director of News Standards

Sinclair Broadcast Group has named Bill Anderson as its new director of News Standards and Practices.

Anderson has been the news director for Local TV owned WTVR in Richmond, VA, since 2008. According to Broadcasting & Cable, he will be based out of Sinclair’s Nashville station WZTV.

Anchor Julie Bragg Joining WTVR in Richmond

After a two-year hiatus from television, Julie Bragg will join WTVR this Summer, Richmond Magazine reports.

Bragg, who used to be an anchor for Richmond NBC-affiliate WWBT, will begin at CBS-affiliate WTVR on August 6 as the 5 and 5:30 p.m. co-anchor. She will be paired with Lorenzo Hall, who is currently a reporter and weekend anchor for the station.

“She loves the broadcasting business,” WTVR general manager Stephen Hayes said. “We believe that’s what she was meant to do.”

The 5 and 5:30 p.m. newscasts are currently anchored by Sam Brock and Stephanie Rochon. Beginning in August, Rochon will continue to anchor the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts, while Brock will be a fill-in anchor and will work on other projects for the station, according to Richmond Magazine.

Belo Introduces New GMs at KMOV and WWL

Belo today announced the appointments of two new general managers at its stations in St. Louis and New Orleans.

Mark Pimentel has been named president and general manager of KMOV, Belo’s St. Louis CBS-affiliate, and Tod Smith has been tapped as president and GM of WWL in New Orleans, as well as MyNetworkTV sister station WUPL.

“Both Mark Pimentel and Tod Smith are outstanding leaders and have delivered noteworthy results throughout their careers,” said Peter Diaz, Belo’s president of media operations, announcing the hires. continued…

On Thursday, “Early Show” anchor Chris Wragge spoke with local political reporters from three CBS-affiliates, asking them for insight on how Obama’s jobs plan is being received in the states where the President has recently visited.

Richmond Landlords Sue WTVR For Defamation

A Richmond management company has filed a defamation lawsuit against WTVR and one of its investigative reporters, Catie Beck, after the station aired a series of reports on living conditions at their properties.

Since last August, WTVR — the CBS affiliate in Richmond — has aired a dozen reports on Space Properties, LLC. The segments showcase a variety of maintenance issues on the company’s properties and have featured interviews with residents, as well as repeated claims by Beck that the company refused to speak with her. In the most recent segment — which you can watch, above — Beck confronted Robert Owens, the head of Space Properties, in the parking lot of one of his residences.

Space Properties is seeking more than $50 million in damages. The suit, which was filed in Chesterfield County circuit court last week, claims that the WTVR reports contained inaccuracies and unverified accusations that were an intentional effort to create fear in tenants’ minds.

Kelli O’Hara, Salt Lake City’s ‘Best Tough Reporter,’ Moves to Durham’s WTVD

Kelli O’Hara, who was recently named Salt Lake City’s “Best Tough Reporter,” is moving across the country to join WTVD, an ABC O&O serving the Durham-Raleigh-Fayetteville market.

WTVD news director Rob Elmore confirmed the move to TVSpy this morning. O’Hara will begin work with the station next week as a general assignment and investigative reporter.

O’Hara has experience covering the region. Before joining Salt Lake City ABC-affiliate KTVX, O’Hara worked at stations in Roanoke, VA and Wilmington, NC, eventually landing a general assignment/investigative reporter job at Richmond’s WTVR.

In naming her the city’s “Best Tough Reporter,” Salt Lake City Weekly said that O’Hara “has the kind of no-fluff grit and gravitas that make even the occasional nonstory, like buying spice in a low-rent convenience store, pop.”

WTVR Reporter Greg McQuade Defends Story on Undercover Planned Parenthood Video

“We wouldn’t just throw something willy-nilly on the air,” WTVR reporter Greg McQuade said recently, defending the CBS-affiliate’s decision to air controversial video footage recorded inside a Richmond Planned Parenthood facility (segment after the jump).

The video was filmed by members of Live Action, an activist organization that has distributed several undercover videos filmed at Planned Parenthood sites around the country. WTVR covered the video, which shows a Planned Parenthood worker discussing an abortion with a girl posing as an underage prostitute, earlier this month and McQuade spoke with Lila Rose, the organization’s president.

“You take an organization at its word,” McQuade told Adam Hochberg, in a new Poynter piece on the pitfalls of using undercover recordings.

McQuade says that he “did his homework” in doing the report and notes that Planned Parenthood “was duly represented.” continued…
