Dahl comes from rival WJBK, Detroit’s Fox O&O. She previously worked at WXYZ as a special projects producer, as well as at WUPW in Toledo and WSYM in Lansing, Mich.

Choi, who will be a multimedia journalist at WXYZ, comes to Detroit from Madison, Wisc., where he was a reporter and anchor at WISC.

Shaffe joins the station from KCTV in Kansas City, where he has been a general assignment reporter for two years. He has also worked at KMTV in Omaha, KKTV in Colorado Springs and KQTV in St. Joseph, Mo.

Dahl has already begun in her new role at WXYZ. Choi and Shaffe begin in early April.

Kuperstein, who has been with WTVJ since 2005, has transitioned to the news desk over the last several months while serving as the station’s weekend sports anchor and weekday sports reporter.  For the past six years, he has also co-hosted WTVJ’s Sunday night sports show.

Yoder has been vice president and general manager of WUPW since 2009. WUPW, the Toledo Fox-affiliate, merged with WTOL, the CBS-affiliate in the market, last month. Prior to his appointment as VP-GM, he served as the station’s general sales manager.

The Toledo Blade reports that the $22 million deal for WUPW between LIN Media, the station’s current owner, and American Spirit Media was approved on Monday.  Attached to the deal is a shared services agreement with Raycom Media, which owns the market’s CBS-affiliate, WTOL.

As WUPW’s new owner pools its resources with WTOL, as many as 63 people could lose their jobs.  A formal announcement about the shared services agreement is expected next week.

The Toledo Blade reports that Ohio state officials have been informed of planned layoffs at WUPW when a deal for the station between American Spirit Media and LIN Media is finalized in the coming months.

American Spirit, a Charlotte-based company run by Thomas Henson, who owns a handful of stations across the country, is buying WUPW from LIN for $22 million.  LIN has owned and operated the station since 2002. continued…

WUPW has been owned by LIN Media since 2002. The company said in a statement they had “filed an application with the FCC to assign WUPW-TV’s license to WUPW License Subsidiary LLC, an indirect subsidiary of American Spirit Media.”

American Spirit Media is a Charlotte-based company owned by Thomas Henson. Henson also owns WXTX in Columbus, WSFX in Wilmington, WUPV in Richmond and KYOU in Ottumwa, IA.

Emerson will anchor the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts at WPSD in Paducah, a station she called “very solid and competitive.”

“I was impressed with the people when I went down to visit,” Emerson told the Toledo Blade.

The showdown is just the latest in a long line of recent disputes between station owners and service providers as both try to affirm their standing in an ever-evolving media landscape.

“Our highly rated television stations are important assets to our local communities and it is unfortunate that DISH does not recognize their fair market value,” said Vincent Sadusky, LIN’s president and CEO, in a statement.

According to DISH, LIN is asking for “more than a 140 percent rate hike.”  With the deadline looming, the two parties are continuing negotiations and both sides say that they’re hopeful that a middle ground can be reached by Friday.

The LIN-DISH dispute comes at a particularly significant time for retrans negotiations since the FCC is set to examine the rules governing the relationship between broadcasters and cable/satellite companies this week. continued…
