Similar to Carrie Bradshaw's view on the world from her New York apartment: writing about women and sex (including older and married women), and infusing my column with the mysterious, the metaphysical, and the serendipitous effects of New York.

What's your idea of a perfect Saturday night?
Dinner and a movie with a good friend.
What's your idea of a perfect Monday morning?
Flop out of bed, arm myself with camera and journal, my morning hike, unplug the day with a flow of hushed creativity amid enchanted wood.
In ten years, I want to be:
Bicoastal, not bipolar.

How does a music career help your writing?
First, I was a songwriter. I heard the words with the music, not separately, together. It was the poetry of the lyrics, the movement of the words, like Terpsichore, the muse of movement. (I saw her once during a thunderstorm when I was a girl.) In a thunderstorm, all the elements collide in a symphony. I studied Dylan and Joni Mitchell, and Beethoven; their music really penetrated me.
Can you give us an example of how you might apply your experience as a musician to your writing?
I still sometimes want to put music to what I write, but I think I'm ahead of the game in a way, because I have a natural instinct for things sounding good. It's more than just constructing a descriptive sentence, or a cleverly-worded piece of dialog. It's got to sing. Actors know it. There's got to be music in the words, mystery in the way they flow. Catcher in the Rye's got music. Listen to the rhythm of Salinger's words. All the senses have to be involved.
