The Way to Tracey Emin's Heart...
...is by bidding for it tomorrow at Sotheby's. The British artist's 2007 neon work "I promise to love you" (above) is estimated to go for between $60,000 and $80,000 at Auction (RED), which kicks off at 7pm on Valentine's Day. Organized by (RED) campaign co-founder Bono and Emin's fellow YBA Damien Hirst, the auction will donate its proceeds to the United Nations Foundation to support HIV/AIDS relief programs in Africa. And the lots! Oh, the lots! (Did we mention that Larry Gagosian is heavily involved?) From Hirst himself comes such works as a seasonally appropriate, giant red heart studded with dead butterflies. Banksy chimes in with his pickaxe-impaled London phone booth, which got stares earlier this month as fashionistas traipsed past it (on display outside Gagosian Gallery in Chelsea) en route to the Alexander Wang show. From Ed Ruscha is "Whiz," a 2007 acrylic word painting on linen. There's a Takashi Murakami smiley-faced-flower ball, a Jeff Koons balloon bunny, and a trio of gorgeous red acrylic works on aluminum from Robert Rauschenberg's Spartan series. Not so enamored with primary colors, Marc Newson offers up one of the coolest Valentine's Day gifts ever: a nickel surfboard that is estimated to sell for between $80,000 and $120,000. But, of course, it's the thought that counts. Email This Post |
