ReBrand Awards: Milk Never Looked So Good

ReBrand recently announced the winners of their ReBrand 100 competition. They’ve only posted images from the top two tiers so far: Best of and distinction.

I just did a quick perusal, but the one that jumped out at me the most was bamboo design‘s rebrand for the Schroeder Company. The rebrand is above. Here’s a photo of the old branding:

I like the look a lot, though it sort of screams “Milk is for Yuppies too!”. I imagine that it really stands out in the dairy case, since most dairy branding (at least the branding I can think of) is either largely unchanged for eons or purposefully retro. Milk is modern… who knew?

Hudson Valley House Tour

Next Sunday, The Russel Wright Center, aka Manitoba, is offering a tour of Russel Wright’s home, Dragon Rock, as well as seven other homes in Garrison and Cold Spring, New York. It’s a gorgeous area to begin with, in close proximity to Storm King (hello, practically the best art experience ever.)

Sounds like a fabulous opportunity for a weekend excursion: Storm King Saturday, then the house tour on Sunday. Also worth noting: the house tour is self-guided, always a plus in my book because you sidestep the whole docent with a herd thing.

Atelier Muji

Nally is a woman who I’ve had the good fortune of meeting a few times through my friend and neighbor Susan Simon. I just got an email with links to Nally’s blog and, even though it was a while back, I wanted to share with you her reportage from the Milan Furniture fair. I like her style – her focus is more on the people than the furniture and the some of the photos are just terrific.</p.

Her comments on the project pictured above for Altier Muji:

Nicoletta Morozzi’s – do it jibun de (jibun de=yourself) – embroidery project for Muji is a challenge – since for years they have been trying to eliminate everything that is decorative and unnecessary. In an era of brands and frills Muji can begin a new process which renders the object one’s own – not material property – but reflecting one’s own personality.

Are your blog rants fit to print? You might want to consider pitching Metropolis. Clueless about how to pitch them effectively? Today’s your lucky day. Over on the mothership, Matthew Nestel advises you in today’s How to Pitch column:

[Executive Editor Martin C.] Pederson, who came onboard as a stringer and got upped to editor, likens his tenure at the magazine to grad school, noting that most of his colleagues, like him, are simply journalist types with a passion for design, learning as they go. His advice to potential contributors? “Come at it from journalism or some aspect of design. When [contributors] come here with an architecture background, we have to rewire them. It’s not a compliment to be told that you write like an architect.”

ClearRx: Interview with Deborah Adler

Designer and blogger Michael Surtees recently published an interview with Deborah Adler the creator of Safe Rx, which has been acquired by Target and renamed ClearRx.

Target is putting a lot of marketing behind rolling out this new product, there’s the dedicated site, linked to above, as well as highly visible print and TV campaigns. Aside from that, their Design for All subsite features an audio interview with Adler which is largely compromised by the fact that their site is chock full of stupid Flashness. I can’t point you to a specific URL, but if you click on the yellow ring, it’ll load the interview. (And then if you click on any of the images that load it’ll reload, very slowly, and maybe pick up the interview where it left off, but I’m not 100% sure.)

Guns Blazing

This week’s New York Magazine has an article about the gun obsession that seems to be sweeping the design industry:

Murray Moss, of home decor museum boutique Moss fame says: “Guns have become so common that we can entertain the idea of having them be cozy, even as a bedside lamp. Are we so comfortable with them that we don’t look at them horrifically anymore?”
