Starck's 'Dwell' Too Similar to 'Dwell' the Magazine?
Reader Jessica Appelgren was kind enough to drop us a line with something she'd noticed recently. Story goes is that opening soon in the former JP Morgan Chase office tower in Manhattan are the newest batch of Philippe Starck-designed condos (called "Yoo by Starck" throughout their several locations). They're rental units this time, instead of the usual for sale way these things have operated with the endeavor elsewhere. Nothing wildly interesting there, but what Jessica noticed was that the name of the development is "dwell," which looks shockingly similar to dwell, the magazine and publishing group. Granted, it's a different font they're using, but it's likely that your normal joe isn't going to notice that, given that it's pretty darn close. So it's pretty strange that someone in Starck's staff or at The Moinian Group (the mammoth company behind these Starck developments), not to mention over at the Bridger Conway, the agency doing all of the branding of all of this, not raising some sort of "Hey, isn't this uncomfortably close?" issue. But maybe that's Starck's new M.O.; now that he dislikes design, it's possible that he and his co-conspirators are just going to borrow other people's work and alter it a little. Next up: MacDonalds by Starck and Fjord Motor Company by Starck. Email This Post |
