British Columbia: Seeing the Forest Through the Trees
A surprisingly very interesting article we randomly ran into this weekend. Originally thinking to ourselves, "how can you possibly talk about British Columbia's forest industry and make it really captivating and, what's more, somehow tie it into design?" (this is the way we think when we see most anything, even butterflies and packets of sugar) But then, of course, you read "Sitting on a Gold Mine" from the Globe and Mail and they explain to you why it's worth your time. You see, the government in the province has finally linked a surplus of wood to why places like Denmark have created billion dollar behemoths like Ikea. Only British Columbia has figured it out too late and now, with their lumber industry in the pits, having shipped wood to billion dollar behemoths like Ikea for decades without using any of it for themselves, they're trying to steer the ship around. There's also some reviewing about an exhibit called the Danish Way of Living in the piece, but for the really interesting parts, you'll enjoy the lumber talk. Email This Post |
