Catching Back Up with John Morefield, the ’5 Cent Architect’

This writer has, for the second time this season, been stricken with the flu plague, so let’s be easy a little easy on him today, okay? He’ll keep things short and sweet, but in exchange for a few more links, so things don’t get boring (and who couldn’t use a break from his constant, unnecessary babble every once in a while?). First up, we follow up on maybe the only architect for whom getting laid off was a good thing. We’re talking about Seattle’s John Morefield, who after losing his job, took to start offering his services via a booth and a sign reading “Architecture: 5 Cents” (you might recall us talking about him a little while back). Well after countless news stories about Morefield and plenty of circulation around the internet, the man is a certifiable mini-celebrity. Whether or not that does anything to help him pay his bills, we’re not sure, but hey, so get what you can get in this economy. He’s popped up again, most recently in this brief interview with our friends at Flavorwire, who talked to him about some bullet-pointed thoughts about the current state of the world, such as:

On suburban sprawl and McMansions: “My parents live in Phoenix, Arizona, and no one’s buying into the 300, 400 home subdivisions that are already built — they’re sitting empty, half built, or just the foundations down. It’s like a post-apocalyptic ghost town.”
