The Electrolux Design Lab competition is back, and this year the focus is on "home appliances for the Internet generation." You have until May 30th to submit creative ideas that address food storage, cooking, and/or washing and are geared toward what Electrolux head of global design Henrik Otto dubs the "iGeneration," meaning "brand-conscious, busy young professionals between 25 and 35 who are independent, concerned about the environment, and whose lives are interwined with technology and social networks." Hey, that's our generation! Alas, our best food storage idea--the Hostess Cupcake Container--has already been produced and is now sold in fine grocery stores everywhere, so we'll be sitting this one out.

As we delighted in telling you last summer, Electrolux turned to a strange, cringeworthy rap video to attract entrants to last year's Design Lab competition. This year, they've done a better job of addressing their target demographic: people who wear interesting glasses. Check out the new video here and be ready to take a sip of the beverage of your choice when a bespectacled person appears (two sips for someone with an outre choice of frames). One of them is last year's winner, Levente Szabo, who designed E-wash, a compact washing machine that uses soap nuts instead of detergent. An extraordinary invention, to be sure, although we can't help but wonder if he misunderstood an aspect of the design brief that read "from soup to nuts."
