Craft Corner Death Match
It’s becoming increasingly obvious that the heir to the Marth Stewart crown is… Martha. That’s all well and good, and I love me some Martha, but I have to say that i find the whole indie D.I.Y thing more intriguing – it’s less girly, more ecologically minded (for the most part) and, well, more modern. Magazines like Ready Made and Make are totally hip-ifying the crafts world. Out of the way scrapbookers – the hipsters are coming!
The newest entry into the crafts are for hip people arena is a new television show on The Style Network: Craft Corner Death Match:
Martha Stewart Living meets Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome when amateur crafters compete against each other, against the clock — and against the imposing Craft Lady of Steel. Armed with nothing more than hot-glue guns and a few basic materials, the contestants must swiftly assemble projects that are judged on beauty, creativity and utility. Host Jason Jones is the devious ringmaster, throwing twists into each challenge and riling up the bloodthirsty studio audience.
Me personally, not so crafty. But I deeply appreciate the crafty tendencies of my friends. My friend Jessica (who incidentally worked on developing the Death Match show) has gifted me all kinds of unique, surprising things made with her own hands, and has recently offered to embroider some jeans for me. (Yes, Jessica, you’re on the hook for that one.) Another crafty duo, Jeni and Yuko, the lovelies behind saltlick stitch up some very groovy t-shirts. So I say to my friends: go forth and be crafty! (And don’t forget the blogger who loves you so.)
Oh, also, The New York Times has an article about the show: Savage Crafters, Start Your Glue Guns. (Free reg required. That or go to bugmenot to get a temp one.)
This show is definitely getting added to my TiVo To Do list.
