It’s awards season, and while there remains a paucity of events at which paparazzi-trailed designers, architects, photographers, and other creative types walk the red carpet (the precise red sponsored by Pantone, the carpet itself by Chilewich) and pick up their statuettes after wacky/touching speeches, we at UnBeige can still get all dressed up and write about the winners. In recent days, we’ve told you about the Good Design Awards, the AIA Young Architects Awards, Contract‘s Interiors Awards, and the Travel + Leisure Design Awards (more awards coverage here). Now we’ll add to that The Design Green Project Awards (formerly known as the Drench Awards), which are presented by Area of Design to recognize excellence in design and address global warming. How can awards help the climate crisis? Half of the proceeds from the design competition go to the StopGlobalWarming.org fund. Plus every entrant receives a compact fluorescent light bulb and a tree is planted in his or her name.
This year’s Design Green Project winners included Brooklyn-based photographer Brett Beyer (whose Christmas card photo we showed you last month). His “Make Green Cool” series of portraits of musicians and preformers uses lighting and long exposures “to show that green energy can be used to power creativity and music.” In the print category, the winner was the endangered species-studded “Revert to Nature” calendar designed by Wong Ying Sheung of the Hong Kong Design Institute. Taking home the “Design Green” award was Melody Johnson of Clark Creative, who designed eco-friendly promotional materials for Barbour Pointe, a Coastal Conservation Community in Savannah, Georgia.
