Doug Aitken’s Broken Screen Breaks

Snuck out of the Art Center conference a teensy bit early to head to the MAK Center at the Schindler House and the release party for our friend Doug Aitken’s book.

Broken Screen features Aitken in conversation with 26 directors, designers and artists. He discusses the future of the non-linear narrative with folks like Robert Altman, John Baldessari, Matthew Barney, Claire Denis, Mike Figgis, Werner Herzog, Rem Koolhaas, Greg Lynn and Ed Ruscha. We missed his live conversation with John Baldessari, but we caught him speaking with Andrea Zittel, our desert-dwelling heroine.

Broken Screen signature cocktails were shaken in the garden (vodka, peach nectar, honey and a nasturtium) where sometimes-scary shorts were projected over gardens of rippling kale. Spotted emerging from the bamboo later that evening were Design Observer’s Lorraine Wild and Jessica Helfand, who discussed the impressive roster of women at the Art Center conference, and William Drenttel, who wanted to stay and watch chocolate-covered rocker Ariel Pink finish his set in the rain. In the end, Aitken had to beg Pink to get off the stage, we’re guessing to obey the conservative residential curfew.
