Euros Are Pretty Sweet These Days; So Too, Apparently, Is Design

We missed this over our hectic weekend, but we’re catching up and we’ll catch you up right along with us. On Friday His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of Denmark [one very big sic] presented the INDEX awards to five winners in five categories. The award is, according to INDEX, “the world’s largest design and innovation award,” something we have no reason to doubt and every reason to praise. It also comes with a total 500,000 Euro prize, which we’re taking is split in some highly secret and undoubtedly complex way among the five winners. They are, with the jury’s “motivation” readable here:

BODY: The winner is LifeStraw–design by Torben Vestergaard Frandsen (Denmark), Rob Fleuren (Holland) and Moshe Frommer (Israel).
HOME: The winner is Softwall–design by Stephanie Forsythe, Todd MacAllen, Canada.
COMMUNITY: The winner is Architecture for Humanity–design by Cameron Sinclair, USA.
PLAY: The winner is Apple iTunes, iPod–design by Apple Design Team, USA.
WORK: The winner is Observatorio Iberoamericano para la Artesania (Work)–design by Fundacion Espanola para la Innovacion de la Artesania, Ministry for Industry, Tourism and Commerce, Spain.

Props to our boy Cameron and obviously to the iPod. Without which our bed-to-desk commutes would be oh-so-tragically Britney-free.
