We Are At Art Basel And It Is TerrificApologies for the late update. It seems that Miami hasn't quite ushered in the latest era of internet accessibility, and we've spent the last twenty-four hours being shepherded (with a few escapes) from design event to design event. There are way too many people here and way too many things to do, but we'll try and boil it down into easily accessible manatee bites. Started off at another Humble Masterpieces book party at the Wolfsonian (awesome "museum of thinkism," go), saw our BFF Poala Antonelli, Judith Regan, and Wolfsonian director Cathy Leff. Left, went to design.05 (uberdeveloper Craig "Aqua" Robins' Art Basel satellite) in the Robins-developed Design District, hung out in Enzo Enea's garden lounge, rocked (literally for once) in Ron Arad's chairs, admired Shao Fan's desk, saw Zaha Hadid's centerpiece (ehhhhh), took a little break in Wendell Castle's Enclosed Reclining Environment for One, and generally rocked our way through four floors of design. Sidekick was migraining, Tart was hungry, and Aric Chen was chilling, so we escaped to Deitch, which was nuts.
Seemed almost like every single hipster artist decided to get on JetBlue and come to Miami Beach, skip every other event, and head straight to Jeffrey's show in the Newton Building. Two performance artists (we're assuming) were covered in white paint (the girl) and black paint (the guy). All part of Live Through This, which Deitch bills as "the most exciting and fresh art being made right now in and around New York," some of which characterization we'd agree with (we like Ryan McGinness), and some of which we're a little less sold on (the chick with the joystick). Left that, back to design.05 where we spotted the best piece of art and/or design we've seen yet, Jeppe Hein's Distance (which we loved loved loved loved loved), then back to the hotel, missing the karaoke. Shame.
This morning, quick tour of the Rubell (yes, that Rubell) Family Collection as well as a look inside the house, designed by Allan Shulman. The house is mostly awesome because of the art, like the six or seven enormous Yoshitomo Nara plates lining the foyer/living room, but of course the bathroom that's literally larger than our apartment made us a little punchy. Left that, stopped for breakfast at the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) in Wynwood, which has a gigantic (and awesome) tile mural. Ran into Brian Sholis of Artforum.com and Raul Barraneche of All-Around Awesomeness. Indulged in pomegranates. We're back at our slightly busted hotel now, but more awesomeness to come. We'll keep you posted. Just as soon as we can process it all ourselves. Email This Post |
